More Downforce.

On a more serious note:

I would be concerned about the lack of steering control on what will now be a very light front end at speed? Add to this any crosswind factor and you could be driving Mary Poppins along the road.

As mentioned in another thread. I was once given the dubious pleasure of driving a fully race prepped Escort RS Cosworth, which had lost it's front splitter. It still retained it's whale tail. Cornering at at speed was a nightmare as the steering was simply unpredictable, dependent on surface undulations and crosswinds. At one point it simply refused to turn in and we actually made it into the kitty litter. Fortunately we were on a race rack.

Tell us....what is the 'high speed' that you speak of that makes your car twitchy.....so much so that you felt compelled to add an external parcel-shelf and visually ruin such a beautiful car....let alone question the design competence of MB engineers ..AND...the abilities of all other C63 coupe drivers out there.......they must be phenomenally high speeds......carried out on the Queen's Highway perhaps ?

Please, also let me know where you live...oops..I see it's Yorkshire.....still, I feel compelled now to avoid that area !

Not one for three letter acronyms but...LOL WTF

I like it but, for what it's worth, I think the you should have bitten the bullet and integrated it with the boot lid....

If you found it didn't work, or just got fed up with it, a body shop would have been able to get the boot lid good as new for a couple of hundred........so....indulge yourself!

The Mrs might even like the look of it..

As you have made a quantifiable improvement, it's well worth carrying on with the front end.....with the number of people on hear liking the design (admittedly lass than the dislikes, but that's to be expected) you might have the start of a tuning business here...

Mounted to an area designed to collapse on impact (read: weak) should the (considerable) drag force overcome it, that wing will bend backwards and then create lift.

I am honestly at a loss to understand how a black series spoiler wld devalue the car and that ironing board hasn't
Its is an abortion and makes the car look ridiculous
Modding a car is always individual but honestly that is awfull

Given the high winds that we've been experiencing recently, I don't think it takes a great stretch of imagination to envisage that boot lid crumpling quicker than a rich tea biscuit in a cup of Tetley's ...oh dear !!!

Looks like a quality product, well done. This is a bolt on so easy on, easy off. Do some testing, then release Version 2 that can be mounted to the boot lid (a thru hole type). I know of at least one guy here who played with the idea of making a wing for his CLS - he may be your first customer?

Or halfords ☺

You could motorise it for some "on the go" tweaking. A true masterpiece, don't let the negative comments put you off.

just kidding :dk:

Many thanks for all your comments, but i knew it would have the Marmite effect from the start, but just to clarify a few points for those who posted:

1. Would you class all Buggati, Bentley, McClaren, Audi, Porsche drivers lunatics?, as their rear wings are designed to come in automatically at speeds over 90mph and upwards. (Audi? - no they are lunatics!)

2. Who is the worst driver on the motorway, the guy doing 90 in the 3rd lane or the driver sat in the middle lane doing 50 with lorry drivers up his / her backside?.

3. The car does not understeer at speed - please believe me! I am still alive, the car is still alive! - it is not an ex - parrot!!!

4. Why did i buy the C63AMG Coupe - let me think?, fuel economy - nope, less wear on my rear tyres so less cutting down of rubber trees - nope. I bought it because it has a sod off 6.3 engine and it goes like the Starship Enterprise, and it makes me smile every time i switch it on.

5. Why did MB add a rear wing and front canards to the Black Series if the std C63 design, after years of development, and money was / is so good? - TKvs?

6. The said rear wing does not have a sign fitted to it saying " all other C63 drivers are w**k" - TKvs

7. Bellow my dear boy - if you are driving along the motorway, and you spot a C63 at 500 foot in the air, you will know the wing has bent backwards and created lift!!!.

8. The car does not go light at the front end at speed, it does not understeer. Please believe me!

9. On a more serious note - SPX - no mate the boot works as per normal, opens and closes fully without hitting rear window or roof. What I have found though, as its now a fraction heavier, the boot has a tendency to close on its own while your getting the shopping out and hits your head.Ouch!

a sod off 6.3 engine

I'm just gonna tell you it's a 6.2 engine before someone else does.

I can't say I like the look, but I do appreciate the engineering input to get it designed, made, mounted :thumb:.

Not sure about C Coupes, but most Mercs have some form of boot lid tension adjusment - often springs with different mounting positions behind the boot side trim panels.

1. Because it pops out when you are breaking not when you are accelerating. Car body shape are designed by it self already to cope with high speeds.
2. The worst driver on motorway is that who don't obey the public road rules and don't have common sense how to participate in traffic overall and especially in busy cities - there you can see more clowns on the road than on motorway when you nearly always have a plenty of room to go ahead.
3. I believe you and wish you long life to you and to your car! - seriously
4. If this car makes you happy just enjoy it and make any modifications on it what you desire nobody can't stop you from that.
5. no clue
6. :dk:
7. I saw at Le Mans in 1999 how merc made flips in the air because it haven't lost rear wing on straight at top speed there was other fault - you should consider this fact and make some other changes in your car.
2Q==

8. Personally me believe you on all 100%
9. This is additional benefit from your engineering masterpiece which will help you quicker realize new projects in your live. I feel it's just like pushing you and say'n we want more engineering like me and you are doing shopping instead of developing new additional item for this car. Maybe front hood will snap your fingers when you will top up screen wash in future with some super practical device added to it?

Mate don't take me serious because I feel this post was made from your first post only for laugh and I'm just trying to keep atmosphere right. I still don't believe that you done this with your car...

FYI....it's McLaren...not McClaren !
But on a more serious note, those cars were designed / developed and tested in wind tunnels by accredited engineers who have the relevant expertise, not someone who tinkers about with cardboard templates a toolbox of Halford spanners and a boxset of Top Gear......ask me to put my kidney transplant in the hands of a surgeon or a GP....I know the answer !!!

2. Who is the worst driver on the motorway, the guy doing 90 in the 3rd lane or the driver sat in the middle lane doing 50 with lorry drivers up his / her backside?.
Finkzy gave you the answer to this already, but neglected to mention that the driver doing 90mph is most assuredly breaking the law and by a considerable margin, personally I'd rather an RTA with a car at 50mph than have you barrel across three lanes at 90mph because a bolt sheared on your 'project'.

3. The car does not understeer at speed - please believe me! I am still alive, the car is still alive! - it is not an ex - parrot!!!
Sorry, where in any of my posts did I mention 'understeer', my grasp of your OP was that it was 'twitchy' !

I wouldn't fault you in that instance, I'm happy it makes you smile.

5. Why did MB add a rear wing and front canards to the Black Series if the std C63 design, after years of development, and money was / is so good? - TKvs?
By virtue of the same marketing strategy and outlook that all manufacturers conspire to, increased profit via market / brand awareness, exclusivity, no different from all those Tresemme / Dove adverts for women.

6. The said rear wing does not have a sign fitted to it saying " all other C63 drivers are w**k" - TKvs

I never claimed that it did.

7. Bellow my dear boy - if you are driving along the motorway, and you spot a C63 at 500 foot in the air, you will know the wing has bent backwards and created lift!!!.

One never bellows my 'dear boy', it's unbecoming and should remain the preserve of the company drill sergeant

8. The car does not go light at the front end at speed, it does not understeer. Please believe me!
I believe you, really, I do, it must be the shadows from all those motorway overhead lights that cause it to go 'twitchy' whilst trying to bounce off the rev limiter

9. On a more serious note - SPX - no mate the boot works as per normal, opens and closes fully without hitting rear window or roof. What I have found though, as its now a fraction heavier, the boot has a tendency to close on its own while your getting the shopping out and hits your head.Ouch!
Does it hurt, one hopes not !
P.P.S.
It's TKvS, not TKvs, my abbreviated name like all tria nomina and proper names possesses majuscules...with the exception of the diminutive 'von' !

Congrats to the OP for showing a bit of ingenuity in order to remedy an issue that from the sounds of it was unresolved by both Mercedes and the muppets on here (just read the original thread). Whilst not to everyone's taste (mine included) the design is quite aggressive for the lines of the car. However, with the companies you have consulted on the design and then end result then I would agree that it should provide additional stability at higher speeds, so well done on that. If the part is predominantly carbon fibre then I guess it will be reasonably lightweight and with it being bolted through the number plate section of the boot lid with I am guessing bracing to ensure rigidity then it should be fine, this is no different to many similar designs.

Always good to see this type of initiative and while it may not suit everyone's taste or technical specs (so many experts on here lol), it's your choice and your car. If it were a £100k super car then fair enough, but it's a C63....

Jules.

I thought it was the 1st April for a minute but it's only March!

What a shocker. Sorry I'm with the majority and don't get it & don't like it. Surely a mod like this needs passing by VOSA/MOT & I'm sure insurance company won't be enthralled by it.

What speeds must you be doing for a C63 to feel unstable? Surely there must be something wrong with the car or are all 63's like that?

I know my 987 Boxster and 57 plate TT V6 Stronic had spoilers that popped up at higher speeds. The MK1 TT had lots of know issues until a rear spolier was added. However these were small in comparison & hidden at low speed only coming up motorised at speed. I have to say I didn't really notice much difference at 70mph.

I can understand if you are tracking it and racing it but on the road I don't see the need. As long as you are happy that is all that matters though. Who cares what all else and sundry think. Don't think most get it though. It does look a bit like a bike rack tbh.
