Most crashed car...

If you count all BMW 3 series as one type, it heads the list with well over twice as many as the Prius.
Wouldn’t really make any difference, as each model represents a sample of 10,000 cars.

All it would do is average them out to a more mid-table position overall.

As said, the data says a little about the cars generally, but probably speaks greater volumes for the typical drivers of those cars. Prius=taxi, driven as suggested already and often covering very high mileage with minimum maintenance (budget tyres etc).

Small french hatchbacks = young kids

Rover 25 = people who should have given up driving years ago but need a car for their weekly trips to Tesco etc.

BMW/Audi brigade, as you know :D

I went to pick up my ancient 3 series convertible from the dealer and while chatting to the taxi driver who dropped me at the dealership , he claimed he does 1k miles per week in his Prius...

after driving the ancient beemer , I was surprised at how my muscle memory was causing me to use the indicator. hopefully that bad habit will wear off soon ...

Yes BMW still are not fitted with indicators and I would of thought Audi's would have been on the list as I think they now don't have indicators fitted and seem to have taken over from BMW :)
BMW’s are fitted with indicators, they just flash at a frequency invisible to poor people

Er, No. These are rates per 10,000. If you add in all the much larger selling diesel models, the average for the three series would drop.

(And remember that the Three series accident stats covers cars up to 40 years old, while a Prius can only be up to 10 years old...)

I rather think it would make a considerable difference; BMWs would be even further ahead.

Er, yes, actually. You are, I think, both assuming the survey data is compiled per 10,000 cars on the road, but I rather think it is in fact compiled per 10,000 accidents. Quote: "it found the most accident-prone motors is (sic) headed by a mix of premium BMWs ..."

There are just under 300 3 Series, and if you add in the other two BMWs in the list, the combined total is just under 450, way ahead of any other manufacturer's combined total. The nearest is Peugeot, with 298.

Sorry, think about it. The only number that’s relevant is the accident per 10,000 cars on the road. Think about it: 35 million cars.

All as confirmed by the article, using the example of the Prius:

“2016, 71,005 of these eco-friendly vehicles were registered in the UK and 787 were involved in shunts, according to the comparison website. Proportionally that works out as 111 accident-prone Prius in every 10,000 examples on the road.”

Oh, and it’s Priuses or Prii, surely?

To repeat the basic point, the 330d and 530d are not big selling cars. The big selling cars are things like the 320d and 520d, which aren’t on this list.

If you look at their source data, you can see BMW has an average accident record overall.

BMW’s average rate being 52 accidents per 10,000

Yes, you're both right. Doh! The quote I used misled me, though; albeit without giving numbers, it says exactly what I said.
