Can anyone confirm my deduction that the COMAND DVD system on the W211 E class cannot play mp3 files? Or am I missing something..?

It can play mp3's. If memory serves up to 1000 songs, but I am not sure how many folders. The earlier E-class DVD comands could not play MP3 but I think that the Comand update CD allow this functionality on the older DVD comands as well

Which update CD? The MY01 update is not for this version of the COMAND system. Is there another?

No, not MY01 that is for the Comand 2.0 and 2.5. There is one for the e class DVD comand, the part number was W 211 589 06 22 00 but might have changed since. In all it takes about 10minutes to complete.

so what about DAB?

ok - ill just go and buy a £100K car with the latest sat nav system etc etc - but cant recieve DAB?

no mention on any site I could find...

MP3, sat nav, and DAB on one unit - i'd happily cough up a grand.

Nope, afraid not. But then if you have the TV tuner you can add the Digital TV tuner and get the Freeview Digital telly stations and Digital Radio stations. So IMHO with everything else you get not having DAB is not a issue.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the Update only enables MP3 on your DVD drive and not on the CD changer. I think that you need to chnage the Changer to get MP3 functionality.

I don't know if you have had the upgrade carried out yet, but once done you can indeed play Mp3's.

Your statement about the CD changer is correct, but don't forget you have a DVD player in the boot for your DVD navigation, and then a DVD player in the COMAND for films audio and once you have the upgrade Mp3's. It will play both CD and DVD. I have not tried a R\W CD but it will play both + and -R.

On the very latest 211's they do not need any upgrade to play Mp3's plus they MIGHT have the new CD changer (which you can buy) and this will indeed play Mp3's. However the CD changer obviously only holds CD's....... so you can write far more Mp3's on a single DVD. Why use the CD changer???

We have a selection of music in the CD changer, ALL our favourite music on Mp3's in the COMAND and have the navigation DVD in the boot. :) :)

If this post is history and you are aware of all this please accept my apologies.

This thread covers all this in detail. There is a weblink to an other forum that has photos of the full mp3 upgrade.

I bought the upgrade disk reference.

W211 589 06 22 00

I can now put 100 CDs onto one DVD and have this in the car. This is one of the best upgrades I have ever done. You can see the album title and then the individual song name comes up with the artist on the screen and also in the centre of the speedo if you want.

I am using Nero 6 to "rip" (convert) all my CD collection into MP3 it takes about 3 minutes per CD including downloading all the track names off the internet.

Totally agree with every word you have said, I use the same software.

I stumbled over this gentlemans question and like you I felt the upgrade is brilliant and it was a shame he didn't appear to have taken advantage of it.

I am however surprised you purchased the upgrade, we just drove up to the dealership went into the lounge for a cup of coffee whilst a technician carried out the necessary work. As you say one cup of coffee and the car was outside ready to go. (can you believe they never valetted it???) :D

No charge of course, but a brilliant upgrade.

Thanks for the informative link and I hope VBD has also read it. (I will see if he is on the thread)

Take care,
John

My stealer wanted to steal   Wanted to charge me £10 plus £40 of labour so I paid my £17 and did it myself.

I think I got the disk before the stealer, they are probably more common now.

I also upgraded the Nav Disks from version 2.0 to version 3.0 2004 got this NavDisk on Ebay for £40 not the hundreds quoted by stealer.

Hi Goldfish,
I am amazed at the appalling service that you are confronted with at your dealership. Did you actually buy the car from them?

I know this question should not be relevant, but if you spent thousands and thousands of pounds with them then there conduct is just simply unacceptable. They quite simply should not have charged you.

The DVD upgrades issue is as you say a major rip off, but I am still angry at the extortion they tried to pull on you.

Take care,
John

Last night I wrote a DVD containing my whole collection of music. A grand total of 1108 mp3's divided into five folders. All I have to do is work out how many hours of music this relates to.

If they're about 3 minutes each then you're talking about 55 hours or so :)

:) Thanks Shude, I have a lot of 'Live' performances Guns-n-Roses 11 minutes Ossy Osbourne etc (the wife will go daft) but your estimate is cetainly a good base to work from.

Now if we average 50mph (take in refueling stops etc.) I reckon on about 2750 miles of travelling.

Thanks,
John

If you know how much space the tracks take up, then assume about 1MB per minute and you have a value that will be closer.

If you own a 211 E-class with a factory installed COMAND system then I would be very concerned if it did not play Mp3 music files.

Please Help a Newbie???

Hi there, not sure if this has been answered but I have jsut bought my new C200K 2001 and it has a COMAND system built in already. It does have an AUX port in the glovebox, but is there anything else I can do to play MP3's, software upgrade?? I have been told it is not the DVD version but the CD version? I would like to link my Ipod in??

Also how do I add a phone connection and video???

Many thanks

Hey guys not sure if I should have started a new thread but does the comand 2 play MP3s? and addition given that there is no changer would I have to therefore compromise the sat nav function so as to play the MP3 disk?

just a quickie, you can buy a revo dab player ( i have ) put it in your glove box and just connect it to the aux ( conect the 12v supply to the cig lighter ) input that SHOULD already be fitted in the glove box,if not then its a £20 part from merc.if you get the remote version then you never need even open your glovebox.
