I recently changed my 4yr C200 Sport Coupe (160 BHP) for a new CLC180 (140 BHP)
Picking the 180 to get better mpg.

However 3K miles in, I get an average of 24mpg on th CLC180 (long term) for the same commute that I got 26mpg for with the C200 (160BHP).

I note the autobox had improved (smoother paddle downchanges).
Anyone else experienced similar or know the reason.

Hello

What sort of journey is yours? That sounds very low but if it's a short trip through town it could be right?

Seems when buying a merc the bigger diesel engines seem to be better by a fair bit than small petrol ones?

Its real stop start in London traffic - but it's the fact it dropped by 2mpg going from the C200 (160BHP) to the CLC180 (143BHP) that stumps me.

It is unlikely that you will get the best fuel consumption until the engine is fully run in, also as the car is different you may need to drive it for a while to 'learn' the most economical way to drive it. in the first six months of driving my Mercedes my fuel consumption improved by nearly 6 MPG!!

I find that after two or three speeding tickets the fuel consumption gets significantly better.

You have less torque in your new car but the same displacement. It may use more fuel even when run in.
