I went from a C180 W202 to a C200cdi W203 so can give a direct comparison.
The C180 would average about 32-34 mpg in mixed driving. If a tank was used mostly around town it would give about 26-28, if it was used on mostly motorways it would give about 36-38.
The C200cdi is a different kettle of fish. Performance is about the same as the C180, but fuel consumption has moved on. The computer shows an average consumption over the last 13,000 miles of 49.8 mpg. The best single trip figure obtained, leisurely journey from Sunbury to Manchester, was 68 mpg. That was at an average door to door speed of 56 mph. A trip of exclusively rush hour London traffic will show about 32 mpg. These are all computer derived figures.
The W(W202)/C(W203) mode, pulling away in second is not to my taste. Having tried it a few times I find myself using much more throttle to pull away than in S mode. Presumably this uses more fuel. The only time I use C is in motorway nose to tail crawling when creeping in S is too slow. S creep is walking pace, C creep is jogging speed.
