Car
C270 CDI (2004 w203)
I regularly get 31.5 mpg (+- 0.5) from my c180 yr 2000 is S mode.

Did a test on last tank full using W mode instead... 28 mpg

This isn't very scientific as you need to do more than once but I've never seen it that low since I've had it.

Just wondered what anyone else thought...

'W' Winter mode pulls the car from standstill in 2nd gear i think thats why.. more effort for the car to pull i'm guessing... :s

i have 2004 W203 and i drive it in C all the time and am only geting about 26-28 mpg :( i have 18" wheels on it with 225 45's all round. would that be causeing the low mpg? or should i try driving in S all the time?

No, 30 or 31 is what it says in the manual. But compared to a diesel maybe.

cheers

I had a C180 it did better than that...although it was a manual, so that maybe accounts for the difference.

Where only getting 21 -23 out off our 211 , 200k . In the 210 200k we are getting 27 29 its a manual

:bannana::bannana:I'm guessing you do lots of town/stop start driving?(i average 28mpg in my clk320 auto as long as my right foot doesn,t hit the floor too much:))

no we do very little town driving , it is 90% b roads and 10% town driving .

That suprises me,i previously had a 2005 c180 auto which used to average 35+mpg doing 50/50 town/urban driving,do you check your tyre pressures are correct regularly/get the car serviced when prompted by assyst?

I have checked the obivous stuf like air filter and tyre ptessures , there all seem fine . I dont have the car long , but the last owner did service it when prompted or so he said . Im gonna service it now my self and fit new plugs , this may help . Il also check the car on STAR when i return to work in 2 weeks to see if i have any underlying codes .

Lucky you have access to star, might throw somethingup that explains the lowish mpg, good luck!;)

My driving is 2/3 fast dual carriage way and 1/3 slow city stuff so I'm not complaining about 32 mpg, was just surprised that driving in W (or C as it is now?) reduct that to 28. But I supose the 2nd gear take off and early change up is just not as efficient.

I guess 32 from a slow petrol car sounds appauling to modern diesel drivers?!

I went from a C180 W202 to a C200cdi W203 so can give a direct comparison.

The C180 would average about 32-34 mpg in mixed driving. If a tank was used mostly around town it would give about 26-28, if it was used on mostly motorways it would give about 36-38.

The C200cdi is a different kettle of fish. Performance is about the same as the C180, but fuel consumption has moved on. The computer shows an average consumption over the last 13,000 miles of 49.8 mpg. The best single trip figure obtained, leisurely journey from Sunbury to Manchester, was 68 mpg. That was at an average door to door speed of 56 mph. A trip of exclusively rush hour London traffic will show about 32 mpg. These are all computer derived figures.

The W(W202)/C(W203) mode, pulling away in second is not to my taste. Having tried it a few times I find myself using much more throttle to pull away than in S mode. Presumably this uses more fuel. The only time I use C is in motorway nose to tail crawling when creeping in S is too slow. S creep is walking pace, C creep is jogging speed.

Yes, I agrre about the crawling in traffic use of W mode.

Your mpg does sound better than mine tho. Had mine for 2 years and is always around 31/32 mpg. How did you get 36! Was it a manual?

Auto.
I suppose it's down to how I drive. I tend to keep to speed limits and use the cruise control. 36mpg ocurred when virtually the whole tank was used on motorways, such as London to Manchester and back.

If you're interested in 'fuel friendly' driving, take a look here. Hypermilling

I use W mode as it prevents the car rolling back. As my drive is quite steep this saves me hitting the garage door when pulling away as the parking brake is rubbish.

setting off in 2nd on a steep drive may not be doing the g/box or TC any favours...
