Hello all,

Here's one for all the armchair lawyers on here.

Among the many buzzes at our gates today, one was from a representative of Nottinghamshire Police, who had come to discuss a recent traffic violation with my wife.

She was spotted in the course of a minor indiscretion, and has to face the music as a result. The police officer has given her a choice; take the points (and presumably a fine also) or commit a day of her time to the local community as reparation.

She would, at this point, rather take the points. Her licence is clean, as it always has been (up to now anyway).

The unknowns at this point are that they have not confirmed exactly how many points, nor if a fine will accompany the points, and if so, how much that would be.

My question is this: are there any other down sides to taking the points (plus fine?) other than monetary considerations? She is not very likely to accumulate points so the tally is not an issue, neither is a notional fine. But what else needs to be considered?

Thanks in advance.

I think a charge sheet would be in order detailing the offence. Never heard of them knocking on someone's door before. I'd ring the police to check

The points may affect her insurance at renewal time.

One day CS sounds ok to me :dk:.

I would definately take the day...

It will be no more than a few hours helping at the local salvation army shop sorting out clothes....

Hi Harry. Apparently they sent a letter recently, but that has not got here yet. We have several outstanding and overdue mail items at the moment, so that could be one of them.

I have no doubts as to the authenticity of the policeman or the nature of the traffic violation. The letter he brought with him today reiterates the nature of the violation, and the proposed actions they will take.

I think I would take the day too, but I am not my wife!

The possible effects on insurance would be something she might need to consider. This is what I was looking for asking the question. Anything else?

Get her to ask for a day at Sue Ryder - she can come out "on the van" with me - I'll look after her ;).

Newbie's buy the lunch :D.

community service all day long ...

points do not mean prizes!!

They do some 1/2 day courses at Eastwood I believe.
I also belive that the impact on insurance would be minimal depending on the offence.

OK, I'll ask...what was the minor indiscretion?

I think you need to get her stand at the gates to your property and shout loudly and repeatedly "Come & Get Me Copper" If this fails try something like "You Dirty Rats You thought You Could Take Me Alive? That Will Never Happen"

Crucial thing might be exactly how Mrs Corned's "crime" is recorded for posterity. There may be no difference between the 2 options but worth checking?

Would the "crime" not be the same and just the tariff recorded and be it three points or a day with the community- its hardly a jobstopper or a gobstopper.

Or does "community service" have a stigma but points not so much.

As I understood it, the option to do a bit of CS results in nothing going any further. No record, no conviction, no anything.

The offence was to fail to observe the requirements of a mandatory turn left sign at the end of a road where it meets a dual carriageway. If you time it right with the traffic, you can go across to the central reservation and effect a right turn, saving having to go left and down to a roundabout several hundred yards away and back again.
