Hello!
I'm new to this forum and would like to thank anyone in advance for being able to offer me any advice about this issue.
I have an old-school camo green Mercedes 410D from 1995, before the Sprinter and Turbo-diesel. It has been converted into a gypsy-style wooden-interiored campervan so it would be a shame to have to scrap it.
But the other day when I was checking the levels, I noticed there was oil floating around in the water. I went straight to a mechanic who told me it was either the oil cooler or most probably the head-gasket.
I've heard changing the oil cooler should be fairly straightforward, but changing the head-gasket could be a bigger job. In case it is the head-gasket I am looking into the available options.
A couple of people who seem to know these engines, have all advised me against trying to change the head-gasket, that it was not worth the job and that I might as well just get a new engine for it. Besides I suspect that not all the cylinders on this 5-cylinder, 2.9 litre engine are firing due to its particularly low-power and sluggishness (it even stalls when turning the steering wheel in a stationary position) and it has also already done 236000 miles!
It seems almost impossible to get hold of an engine for an old Mercedes 410D but on talking to a breaker, was told that a Ssangyong Musso's 2.9l, 5-cylinder non-turbo-diesel Mercedes engine of type 602 may also fit. These are exactly like my current engine's specifications. These seem a lot easier to get hold of and are well priced. I understand that a few modifications may need to be done but that that wouldn't matter so much. I guess my main concern is that it might not fit my gear-box or maybe any other smaller bits.
It would be greatly appreciated if anyone could shed any light on this issue, and be even greater if someone could share their experience of actually having done this! I would do it myself alongside an experienced mechanic.
Thank you so much!! You're amazing!!
Sean
