For clarity before reading this please accept I fully admit I am not a driving god :)

I decided to have an LSD fitted to my car as it did not have one from the factory. Most folks with LSD’s fitted recommend them and my TVR has one and drives very well with it considering it is 20 years old now. My research was quite short given that the most recommended one available was a Quaife unit and I knew already about their reputation for excellence in this field. After some good posts on the forum about “Wavetrec” I did look at them as an alternative but decided on the Quaife because of their history and the fact so many other C63 owners had already fitted them and were happy with the product.

The job was done by GAD Tuning in Burnham on Crouch in deepest Essex and they were excellent to deal with from the initial point of contact right through to collecting the car afterwards. The team at GAD had fitted several before to both C63’s and other AMG cars and their price for a “drive in drive out” job of £1,495 inclusive was good to my wallet and completed in one day with the car dropped off at 8:30 and collected at 4:00 :thumb:

One benefit of having the job done at GAD is the road out of Burnham which has a lovely selection of 90 degree corners, twisty bits and long straights with excellent vision. As soon as I started to ask the car for power out of corners I could feel the difference. There was more grip out of slow speed corners and the car felt more planted coming out of faster corners when I pressed the throttle pedal. I have since driven the car on a variety of roads and can honestly say the Quaife has allowed me to come out of corners, bends and roundabouts a lot quicker and hence get to some rather alarming speeds soon afterwards  I have tried full bore acceleration out of some smoother corners using manual mode a few times now and even on a slippery surface after an earlier rain shower the rear of the car just squirmed for a split second, flashed the TC light on the dashboard and then sat down and blasted up the road with no issue at all.

I have not yet got round to knocking the traction controls back a bit to see what the effect is in lower “nanny” settings but I will when I get access to a suitably large and safe area to do so, Snetterton is a likely venue for this as I like the 300 track layout. I do not think there will be much difference apart from the back possibly stepping out on me earlier than I might expect but in a controllable way and not in “instant snap” mode unless the controls are all fully off and my driving skills are outweighed by my right foot, highly unlikely to ever be a combination I find myself in:cool: . In my TVR, which has no electrical input at all to work in parallel with the LSD, I can feel the car starting to slide and am able to judge this and either back off gently or catch the car on the throttle and control the slide so I do not see many issues in the AMG once I am used to the messages the car is giving me should the back start to wander. As stated at the start I am not a driving god (TVR’s can be unsettled very easily even at low speeds) and will be keeping all the electric aids to driving up and running at all times on the roads. With what I have gleaned from the LSD fitting to date I firmly believe the money spent is a worthwhile investment that will allow me to enjoy the power and driveability of the car all year round.

These cars are very powerful machines as we all know and anything we can add to them to make them safer and more driveable should always be considered in my opinion.

Really great write-up Yex. Thanks for this.

It's a shame in a way that we're having this discussion though and M-B didn't fit one as standard. The only real oversight on the, otherwise excellent, 507.

I'm guessing that MB thought that their electronic wizardry would stop anything too serious occurring at the back end so they thought the LSD would be superfluous.

It does stop anything happening very well but that's missing the point.

Fantasstic, I have a quaife too and the difference is really massive.

You are correct regarding the progressive oversteer once the traction control is defeated. Compared to a shorter sports car, everything happens almost in slow motion, it's so easy to catch and play with. It's so beautifully balanced. Well, it's always traction limited, but always lets go in a progressive manner and will gently come back into line once you've finished playing. Lovely!

Rear brake pad life also increases, with less nannying from the back end.

A friend just bought a C63 Coupe, wanted to give it a go for a while before considering an LSD. After being used to M cars with LSDs, it's just not acceptable. He's now getting an LSD.

At least the bean counters got it right for the W205.

Nice :thumb: Wasn't aware of that place in Burnham but thanks for the recommendation. As you say, the Burnham bends is a good bit of road for it's maiden drive home :D

I had a beautiful Cerbera a few years ago and regret not getting an LSD fitted to that. Would have made it a lot friendlier I think!

Yex, out of curiosity do you have to tell your insurance company of this? Did your insurance go up at all?

Linz, I have and nothing happened. I'm with the same insurer I have been with since 2010 when I bought my TVR. That car has had a lot of money spent on it over the years and they haven't raised the premium when I have advised them of the improvements I have had done to the car. Effectively unless the engine is played with to generate more than the 285BHP it left the factory with (allegedly as it is a TVR :) )my premiums never went up. Same approach with the AMG as well :thumb:

End of the day they just a money grabbing scam, looking for any means to get whatever they can.

I’m not sure anyone could tell if the car had a Quaife fitted unless they stripped down the diff completely.

True, but for the sake of little to no increase in premiums on a £20k+ car to be covered I'd declare it. There are other ways of finding out what work has been done, posts on here for one...

One of the best mods you can have :)
