My C43/C55 Conversion

Hi,
Well it has been a while now since the conversion was completed, I can,t begin to tell you how much of an improvement it is, general driving, smoothness, and of course performance, though apart from the performance, it is difficult to tell how much of this is down to the engine as I had many other parts fitted whilst the engine was out, i.e. engine and gearbox mounts, gearbox and TC rebuilt, anti-roll bar bushes etc.
Regarding performance, I would,nt say that there is much improvement to 60, but from 60 on it is a different story, the torque improvement is just awesome it just pulls and pulls, but do bear in mind i,m still running the car on a stock C43 AMG map, and exhaust.
I hope to in the near future to get a rolling road test, to see how it exactly compares to my previous power run now that it has the 55 engine in it.
I,m at the moment saving all my available pennies to finance, a Renntec conversion and de-catt from Olly, which will consist of a modified carbon fibre airbox, ECU remap with improved transmission adaptations, at this point I will get another power run done, to see how much it has improved.
It has,nt all been positive though, the fuel consumption has gone through the roof, about 200ish miles to a tank but this I think is down to my heavy right foot, as the power delivery and induction roar is just so addictive, and I am hoping it may improve once the remapp has taken place.
It also broke down on me, and I needed to call out the AA, intially thinking it was a flat battery it turned out to be a dodgy connection on the starter Solenoid, which involved the AA man jacking the car up removing the undertray to gain access. I was telling him about the engine conversion I had done and would,nt believe it as he said everything underneath looked like it never been touched from the factory let alone a new engine being fitted, which I think Is good testimony to Olly and Jacks tenacity, thoroughness, and engineering ability, not to mention their attention to detail.
I hope at some point to fit a pair of cams and exhaust manifolds but i,m going to have to deal with the body work first.

Well shes going great Olly cheers, though I,m having a few issues which I discussed with you last time I popped in, i.e. rear wheel bearing droning, and worn Camber/Castor bushes.
Due to lack of finances, and as you are aware I,m in the process of having the bushes replaced in your old lower arms (got the bushes from Euromerc/Nick), and I have just bought a 2nd hand rear hub from a CLK320, which I will get fitted with a new bearing, and bush.
Once all the above is fitted, a 4 wheel alignment and a pair of very badly needed front tyres.
Then I will be talking buisness regarding the Renn-Tec stuff & De-Cat. that we have discussed though I would like to do a power run on a rolling road before and after the Renn-Tec stuff is fitted.
What was that ticking noise that was on the passenger side of Bobbies brothers estate? as i think i may have the same issue developing.

Noises? I'm listening as I have a noise problem coming from the passenger side (LWD) specially when turning to the right. I still have not found the cause and it's NOT bearings as those have been checked and are all in A1 condition.

Andy

I have a ticking on on my C55 estate that is from the front passenger side. It is the solenoid valve that sits in the inner wing between the headlight and the battery. No idea what it does I believe it is fuel pressure solenoid. But it ticks and it can be quite audible once you notice it.

That is the re-circulation valve. It re-circulates/vents fuel tank vapour into the inlet manifold.

Pop in and let me have a listen.

Andy, I spotted your car on Friday night!! Looked good too.

We were checking in to a hotel late so I couldn't really stop to see if you were about, so when I got up to the room I looked out of the window to see you had moved and was then side by side with a tasty E39.

I stuck to the window expecting a nice noise to echo from the tall buildings ;) - Mrs D thought I was mad. I finally went to brush my teeth and you departed the moment I walked into the bathroom!! Doh...

That would of been the new hotel just off of West Quay Road. I was at the burger van, somtimes my haunt at the weekend when the pubs have shut.
Shame you could,nt of come down for a coffee. I,m surprised you did,nt hear me leave, as it does echo rather nicely around those buildings.
How was your stay in Southampton?

I heard something and ran to the window complete with toothbrush, but you'd gone!!

We were at Goodwood Festival of Speed over the weekend, so we stayed in the Premier Inn for a couple of nights.

Very impressed with the hotel and the area surrounding - reminded me of Canary Wharf with the modern and relatively imposing architecture.

Any idea what the heck that huuuuuge cruise ship was that was docked directly in front of Ikea over the weekend?

I assume it was there of Friday night but we didn't see it - it was quite a shock on Saturday morning!! By far the biggest cruise ship I've seen in Southampton.

I can confirm.... and a bit of pedal in an enclosed area will get people looking out of windows checking what monster is lurking around, but you'll be long gone before. I love it

Hi,
Well just an update though this thread is nearly a year old now, I have now had ollies de-cat pipe fitted and it does sound rather sweet. I have yet to do a power run with the 55 engine and now re-mapping so i,m still running on the standard 43 map. So i have been dragging my heels a bit due to unexpected financial commitments. But as we speak it is ready to be picked up from where it has had a complete new outer sill replaced as well as the jacking point rebuilt, a foot square insert in the floor renewed, part of the inner sill and a closing plate in the front inner wing. As all this work involved removing of the passenger side doors and front wing, I have had the wing replaced and all the new steel work painted, and a good dosing of waxoyl, on both sides of the car. Should be picking it back up tomorrow or Tuesday fingers crossed. I have a load of pics taken by the place that did it, which I will post on here in the near future.
I now find myself thinking ahead about the rest of the 55 conversion ie rear diff and a CLK 55 gearbox, and whether it is actually worth it, would it be worth just doing one or the other any comments welcome.
My intentions are to get the car resprayed by next summer, with a rolling road re-mapping completed at about the same time. At this point I would hope to have made a decison on what I,m gonna do about the gearbox and diff.
Any thoughts or comments feel free.

I would only spend money on a remap... and just maintain and enjoy it... if you look after the gearbox with regular oil changes you have nothing to worry about, and if it does go bang then it becomes a necessary mod :-), but I'd hang tight til then.

Would be interested to know the power figures before and after the remap

As said Andy, i would get the re-map done then get the Bodywork finished and enjoy it. Don't think the 55 G/box and diff would be worth doing mate.

Unless you could find a LSD Diff, that is what i want for mine

Hi,
Well i think you might be right as the 43 gearbox and torque convertor was rebuilt before the 55 engine was fitted, and to fit a 55 diff in a 202 would require some floor pan modification. It was the fact I fancied converting it to tiptronic and as the CLK 55 already has tip I would be halfway there.
Regarding a LSD for the car I believe they can be bought from Quaife, and they were less than a standard 43 diff from MB, IIRC the LSD is less than £1000, and they rebuild your diff.

Regarding the LSD, is it true that the W124 E500 was fitted with one ??
There must be a model that had one fitted as standard, that could be used :bannana:

Hi,
Not sure regarding the E500 having a LSD or not, but one of the things I was wondering about with fitting a CLK 55 diff was the ESP as the wheels would be turning more or less than the 43 diff compared to one turn of the prop, and would kick up an ESP fault which I would have thought would involve either some clever STAR work or a 55 ESP ECU, maybe someone else knows what the procedure is when changing diff ratios with cars equipped with ESP.

The ESP doesn't mind as that uses the wheel sensors, but eh gearbox TCU has a right little paddy and refuses to play.
