Hi guys,

As you will know, last month I went over to Germany to the Nurburgring - you may have seen my passenger taxi lap in the AMG GT R as per the thread HERE

An hour or so later, I did a lap myself in my own car:

Its not the fastest I know, but I was happy with it. I had a great time and the past 4 years doing sub 7min laps on my VR gaming set up clearly helped.

A shame about the guy who hit a deer halfway round :(

Thanks for watching!

Awesome job and looks like an amazing day for it, quiet and dry! I've had a few blasts in the "Rent4Ring" Suzuki Swift on BUSY Touristenfahrten days, great fun but you have to watch out for crazy locals in ZO6's and caged 328i's going for sub 8's!

Nice video. I like the fact that you took it steady - no point being a hero. Out of interest - is your car "technically" uninsured if you take it on the 'ring or do people tend to buy insurance for the day to cover themselves? We all know a standard policy excludes it (usually) - I just wonder how many people take the risk and how many insure for a one-off trip in their own car.

Insurance companies normally exclude the ‘ring’ but it can be purchased by certain companies. If things do go t i t s up it can be very expensive. Having said all that folk including myself have taken the risk for the experience but it’s always at the back of your mind “what if”
Couple of year old prices...
BASE FEE FOR ATTENDANCE OF ARMCO TRUCK – €150
REMOVING DAMAGED ARMCO – €10/METRE (X2 OR X3 OR X4 FOR MULTIPLE-HEIGHT SECTIONS)
REPLACEMENT ARMCO – €31/METRE (X2 OR X3 FOR DOUBLE/TRIPLE HEIGHT)
REMOVING DAMAGED ARMCO POSTS – €5.10 EACH
REPLACING ARMCO POST – €39 EACH
SAFETY CAR ATTENDANCE – €82 PER 30 MINS (CAR AND TWO PEOPLE)
CIRCUIT CLOSURE FROM – €1,350 PER HOUR
RECOVERY TRUCK FROM – €600 (INC VAT)

No I didnt actually get Insurance for the actual track, I risked it.

Yes in theory things can go very wrong. this however is ultra rare. It was my 40th and I thought, lifes too short not to take the odd risk and so on :)

Already planning next trip, Mrs loved it there. Not really the car parts of it, but the atmosphere, the dense forests and the amazing food.

My next video is a short film documenting the entire trip.

A guy I know went to the ‘ring but his car packed up somewhere in Belgium. Undeterred, he scrounged a lift the rest of the way and rented a track prepared BMW 325i when he got there. Not being used to rear wheel drive, he lost it on a greasy bit and ended up in the Armco. Total bill for fixing track and car - €8000. Quite an expensive day out..

Cheers,

Gaz

In regards to getting insurance on a TF day its pretty pricey for what it is and doesn't cover as much as you expect, and not to mention the excess..

I think it's worth taking the punt and driving within your limits. Just don't chase times as a lot of people do. If you wanna chase times book a track day where rules apply and insure will be much cheaper.

Alternative buy a track car and insure in germany...!

OT: Loved the video @KillerHERTZ, also good too see you dragged your Mrs along! (I think subliminaly if we have someone in the car with us at the same time we would be more careful hah)

Thats weird, all the main Ring rental firms require insurance to be taken out with them (as far as I know).

Carthrottle recently did a video to debunk alot of the stories about £40k bills etc, if you do crash its almost certainly under £2k at worse.

Its easy to think of the Ring as a death trap, but with over 1000 public cars on each day there are only the odd 1 or 2 minor dings each night

Thanks, she is terrified at speed in cars, due to a crash in her past and only agreed to come on board with me literally 1 min before I switched on engine. As you say, I possibly may have gone a little quicker without her being in the car, however I could be writing this with a written off CLS instead!

You can’t account for the person following who skids on your dropped fluids and sues you for their life changing injuries. Just saying.

No different than on any road.

The ring is a toll road and the exact same laws apply.

This was a good few years ago now (I remember the 325 was an E30). Maybe that 8K was after insurance!

Having been there, I’d say track days look a safer bet than TF. I’ve never driven, but had some fun taxi laps in interesting cars.

Well I think that’s a great video and I like the fact that you were checking in on your missus to make sure she was ok given her past experience. It would have been easy to get lost in the adrenaline and boot it more. Fair play to you. I’ve spent a lot of time driving in Germany over the years. Quite a few trips in my CLK. it’s an underrated country which has so much to offer.

I freely admit that I wouldn’t have ever really visited the place were it not for my best mate moving there years ago and me going to visit. I love the people, the food and the countryside. German people like the English and I have always found then very welcoming.

One thing that I would recommend any visitor doing is visiting one of the old concentration camps. It’s a sombre experience but only when you have seen it can you start to appreciate what happened in WW2.

Thanks KH. I enjoyed that and learnt a bit more about the circuit. Great soundtrack from the car. I laughed at your "YouTube Corner" comments.

Recognised if from all those YouTube vids :-)

I think it’s a must trip for any petrolhead purely for the novelty factor if nothing else. Forget trying to set lap times. The track is 12 miles in length and it’s impossible to learn unless you’ve already spent a small fortune doing lap after lap or spent many hours on the play station.
Driving a V8 C63 means sweet FA around any track especially the ‘ring’ and reality sets in when you are overtaken by a VW Polo, four up with German plates on it. Just enjoy the experience and the scenery for that matter and don’t get drawn into any ‘my car is faster than your car’ scenarios because it will end in tears.
Oh and try not to crash because it can cost you a small fortune as posted previously.
