My R107 500 SL Refurb

- Colour of Sill should be dark grey
- Headlamp Wiper?
Yep, that's two of them. I'm still very much in two minds wether to paint the sills grey or not - they've been stone chiped and painted red for now while I decide.

I know it's not original but I think works.......

hmm im struggling to see anything else different... There should be a backing plate behind the front number plate but thats tiny.. Then chrome centre caps but it looks like you had those before..

The sills look fine, only an anorak would notice the difference.

The other change is simple too - I haven't put the boot badge back on.

The centre caps were added by the previous owner. Must admit I had never noticed the lack of the front plate surround!

superb. looks lovely.

for me, the sills must be either the original grey, or even better matte black. never body colour

I know what you mean. I have the paint to do them in original grey, but I kinda like them red - and it makes them easy to clean as it's easy to spot when they're dirty.

Two mind about it. Arghhhh :dk:

Maybe I'll decide next year - I won't be painting anything until the temperature gets up a bit!

Two years since I've updated this thread. Doesn't time fly! To be fair, I haven't been doing much to the car, but a recent move means the car is now garaged. Apart from potentially saving it's life, it now gives me a winter to do some more jobs.

So, I figured I'd tackle a few jobs at once. I wanted to fix some rust on the inner cowl side panels. For some reason, both of these were quite rusty - not deep as the metal is very thick, but certainly something that needed sorting.

The Master Cylinder needed a refurb (for what turned out to be a leaking seal between the Master Cylinder and Brake Booster), and I knew there was rust in the small area underneath the ABS pump and in the area through the bottom hole in the picture above, so I thought what the hell - lets strip down everything on that side and give it a good spruce up.

Rust treated under the ABS pump - you can see a hole under the bracket - that shouldn't be there! The drain hole (hidden by one of the brake pipes) was partially blocked so water was just sitting under here. I forgot to take a "before pic, so you'll just have to take my word that there was a lot of surface rust to prep around here, and it's a proper awkward place to get too!

Small amount of rust where the water bottle had rubbed against its bracket.

Brake pipes are awkward - they are clipped together with rubber dampers, taped and then tied. Some of the ties had "slipped" off over the years. All a bit dirty under there but remarkably clean and free of rust.

Also removed the bracket that holds the expansion tank to get better access.

After Pics next.....

And Some after pics. First job was to fill that hole and clean up under the ABS.

Front Cowl now painted - hole underneath the ABS bracket now properly filled, primed, seam sealer applied, primed again and finally four coats of paint.

The corner where the bracket, inner wing and chassis leg meets is where the hole ended. You can also see I've tapped another hole through to allow water to drain otherwise there is nowhere for the water to go - it just sits in a nice little bath (my suspicion is that Merc didn't think of this when they added the ABS bracket to later cars).

Underneath the ABS pump all nice now. In the foreground you can see the drain hole nice and clear now. That hole is now all treated and restored too!

Here you can see the ABS pump clean up(haven't put the cover on it yet), along with the area under the pump nice and clean. Also painted the brackets black so it looks a bit fresher.

Rust removed from the bracket that holds the water bottle, and decided to paint the expansion tank bracket red to fit in a bit nicer .

All the brake lines have been clipped back together - those dampers are a right pain to fit, and even harder is getting tape around them afterwards!

After this, the master cylinder was put back in.... and the last most easily accessible brake line into it cross threaded. I think the actual threaded nut has stretched. Unfortunately the threads on the master cylinder are stripped, so a new one is on order before I can bleed the whole system and check whether everything works. I'll need to cut the nut off and replace also.

I've also refurbed the front fog lights and cross brace at the same time - pics to follow!

Looks really great, its always nice to see somebody putting in the hours to prolong the life of these great cars.

I am trying to do the same with my C126, I have a lot more rust to deal with though.
