The SL (230) has 4 round vents, 2 of which are in the centre dash controlled by a chromed knurled wheel which controls air flow to both centre vents.

Only the right of centre vent will close, the left of centre vent stays open.

Analysis is if it was a jammed motor STAR would report it (?) so its a failed linkage I think

Question is has anyone seen this linkage and how easily fixable is it (Comand out i guess)

Its an easy / no brainer fault to live with but I like things to be perfect can anyone advise please

Hi.
On the w124 the flaps can individually be closed etc via a hex bolt within the vent ( bear with me lol )
This is for adjustment of their position so that off means off etc.

Not sure if it's the same but could it be one linkage on yours has worn or just needs adjusted back to home?

Hope it's of help to you.
If not. Shoulda bought a w124. Much less grief.
No spec = no faults :0)

Its not a COMAND out job.

You unclip very carefully the centre speaker grill, and there are 2 screws (TORX TX20) that screw into the top of the vent.
Then there are some clips on the vent which need unclipping as you pull. I think there are some pictures of this on Mercedes Electronics upgrades, installation and retrofits somewhere

The clips are part of the vents and spring outward holding it in, so they need to be pulled back inward as the vent is pulled toward you. There is a clip at bottom and top on each side, and I use a pair of MB pulling hooks as you can hook them in and pull the vents out
