Navi Retro fit

Yawn
again pointless and irrelevant
yawn

Perhaps you got an impolite comment, perhaps not but I hate it when someone asking for help, spends time criticizing the feedback. I would ignore all negative comments at least up to the point my problem got solved. Now I'm hesitating if it makes sense to contribute with the risk of unwanted feedback (justified or not).

Anyway, the prefacelift 204 had a relatively cheap OEM retrofit solution for navigation called UMI or Navigation 20. I installed this myself when we had this car in our family. I'm sure the parts are not any more available from MB dealers but one might find a second hand set from eBay.

I wouldn't install Chinese after market kits which more or less leaves option 2 from markay's list, perhaps 4 or 5 too, and option 6!

I'm not sure if this is something worth considering, but the guys at integrated automotive do retrofit Carplay/Android Auto units for NTG 3.5 and later. Worth giving your VIN to Scott at integrated automotive and he'll tell you if it can work etc.

I had one in a 2013 E-Class with NTG 4.7, it's a 2 hour job but simple enough to do, and instead of installing a sat nav and paying for map updates, I ended up just using Apple Maps/Google Maps/Waze via my phone. The unit connects to your phone wirelessly or wired.

They're a little pricey, but they do the trick - other versions are available on Amazon for a little less money, but not sure of their origins and I can't vouch for the quality.

I was aware of this, however I assumed that it only supported COMAND and not Audio20, because I can really see the Audio20 display working with Apple CarPlay? But it's worth checking with the manufacturer.

Navigation 20 is a good call, forgot about that one, if you can find the parts (as you pointed out).

I've seen CarPlay working with an Audio 20 unit in a 2012 w204 c-class with 5.8 inch display, it's got 'rough edges' but is readable and works. I think the comand requirement may be about the rear aux input being already activated (Comand)/just needing activating (Audio 20) in the engineering menu, or that maybe the audio 20 units need a headphone lead running to the classic aux input/MMI contraptions. I could be wrong. Don't think it works for the really tiny displays (is that NTG3?). But as you say, worth checking with Integrated Automotive first rather than taking my friendly advice as official :)

A bit like this one (can't vouch for quality of this link, just thinking out loud) HERE, and it'll likely depend on the screen you have under the cover.

Similarly, there are CarPlay boxes that slot into the Becker Map Pilot slot - if fitted, which if I recall is not in OP's car but for others - my folks have this latter set up and it works well enough if a bit rough round the edges, visually speaking.

Many thanks gents, you’ve given me a few options to think about, I shall look into them, I really want to be able to keep some form of display for radio stations and track info from the original stereo when using it.
thank you

No problem. Keep us updated on what you go for and its benefits/drawbacks, always good to know for others or new projects down the line.

I think I’m going to try and get the proper sat nav (command NTG4
Does anyone on here know of anyone who can they’d recommend for any mods I’d need doing to the coding on the car? I’m lead to believe and know other cars I’ve had, also adds instruction for navigation actually on the dashboard

Mark at comandonline down in Lightwater, Surrey really knows his stuff. He retro-installed and coded carplay on my ntg 5.1 system last year, no issues.

They retrofitted COMAND NTG4.5 to my car and did a brilliant job.

Be sure to inform your insurance co of said mod once done

I declared the mod to Aviva, they said it will be covered under 'car stereo', no increase in premium.

Mikey, I know you wanted to keep it original but for the functionality you may be as well replacing with an aftermarket unit, I was trying to find solutions for my old CLK and gave up and fitted a Pioneer and 2021779F-D7D7-48A7-80F7-022197E74A0B.jpegjust use everything through CarPlay.

Thanks Jools, I did think about it i, but my unit is only single din, not double din as I have heater vents directly above the stereo and then the screen above the heater vents

Facelift in W204 was for Model Year 2012, which started build around March 2011. There were many pre-facelift cars sold after the facelift somewhat discounted !

I’ve changed my mind and ordered a replacement screen that will enable apple car play, reversing camera, dab, and TPMS
I’ve ordered it, I’ve chosen this screen as it looks like the OEM screen and still enables the original radio/cd screen functions
Once it’s delivered and I’ve fitted it, I’ll post some photos
Thanks to all that made genuine and useful suggestions/advice other than some suggesting I sell the car

Can you share what you've ordered? Presumably it's an Android-based unit of some description?

I tried to share a photo but it was too big for the forum 🤷🏻‍♂️

This is what I’ve ordered, doe’s pretty much everything I want/need and seems to have good reviews, and like I say, two important things for me was to look like OEM and enable me access to a screen like the standard one
Once it’s delivered I’ll post a few fitted photos

In post #2 , option 3 only covered the 10.25" option for the facelift model, but obviously with the pre-facelift you can keep the original look :thumb:

Looks like a good solution. Worth doing.
