Well my W221 S320 is I believe at the point of needing a new starter battery, when I start the vehicle the dash lights go out for a few seconds and then the car starts, had a look and it is a Varta,60ah 680 Aen nothing special about it except the price from the local Mercedes dealership quoting £170 for it and that is fit myself, any way round this

Have you tried Halfords ?

Just stick your reg number into their site and it will give you all they have available for your vehicle , they will even fit it for an extra £10 and dispose of the original.

Loads of online shops with good battery deals but what if you need to claim the warranty , you are without a car until it is resolved , if they are still trading in a few years.

Yuasa batteries are stocked at Halfords and most people are pretty close to a store should an issue arise.

ECP are really expensive for batteries so dont bother checking there , even with the discount codes.

A Yuasa Silver battery with a five year guarantee is £130 supplied for my CLS.

ECP are far cheaper than Halfords for me Kenny. Also, Halfords are very limited to manufacturers and don't stock either Varta or Bosch should either be the choice.
Maybe it's a regional thing:dk:

Tayna seem to be the go to online supplier who have a suitable battery ranging from £179 down to £50. You pays your money and makes your choice.Depends if you need it yesterday or not.:D

The G3 Varta 95Ah 800A CCA delivered for £90 looks a steal to me.

A few years ago I needed a new battery and tried all the usual options: local dealer, Halfords etc and they all seemed a bit expensive.

But I think it was the dealer who suggested I try the Mercedes breakdown service. I still had Mobilo Life cover at the time and so they came to the house and fitted a battery. The fitting and callout was free and they charged around £95 for the battery. This turned out to be the cheapest option compared with all the others I had checked. Also the most convenient!

If you have the Mercedes breakdown cover it might be worth asking them.

Hi guys,I have been under the bonnet and measured the battery,it is not a stock size,I did as you suggested and went online put the reg in and all those sites just give the big battery which in my car is behind the rear seats only reached by removing the rear panel in the boot, the starter battery in the engine bay measures 195mm high, depth is 175mm both of these are standard sizes the length is 260mm and all the batteries I have looked at are 242mm or far longer than the one in the car,the fact that Varta's own web site does not give this battery suggests to me that they make this battery just for Mercedes,I fear another stitch up on the spare parts front.

^ Just as well you checked then. That is a bit naughty designing the compartment so only an MB branded one will fit.

Ok I have been on the Tayna site, given the 60ah and the 680 Aen it seems the best fit is the stop start ones a Exide may well be the closest one to the one fitted, need a expert on batteries, does my car need all that 680 cranking, would it matter to have a number higher than 60ah,this is the first time I have ever had to search hard to find a car battery, thankfully the car started this morning no problem.

You mentioned in the first post that is was the starter battery you were needing , is that not the one in the boot and it is the auxiliary battery is under the bonnet :dk:

ECP were £170 for the Bosch S5 019, with the voucher , i even called them direct to see if they could better the price but they couldn`t . the same battery from Tanya was £60 less and from eBay was £70 less :dk:

I replaced the battery on my W211 320cdi last month , 95 amp HR , AGM battery fitted by Mercedes dealer for £140. It is a Varta according to the label on it. Got a 2 year warranty so not as good as others but car staring perfectly now . Oh and got the car washed as well as the battery fitting!,,

I think like many drivers I have changed batteries over the years, and depending if you want a top brand or a cheap deal you tend to go to Halfords,or use the garage,or buy online, but always having put your reg in you get a choice, this time I am finding how little I know about batteries I suspect even as this battery is supposed to just start the car, given it is a Mercedes the power of the battery is going to be important,I think it would be possible to fit a shorter battery as we are only looking at 18mm,at the moment I am looking at Varta at £75 or a Exide at £113 which is spot on for power but is a stop start battery, the battery I have fitted is a wet battery as it cautions about acid spills, need to do some homework on what is possible I think the 60ah part is very important,I may be wrong because this battery will have to be charged as well as the large one in the boot, upsets there will mean that my built in fridge and automatic cocktail maker might not work as I drive along.

I've used Tayna many times. Next working day delivery and good prices

On another note, the Bosch/Varta Blue and Silver series are identical, the only thing the different colours signify if the length of the warranty period.

I replaced the battery in my C180K from ECP online, 019 Lion battery, 100Ah 800cca, 3yr warranty, £107.

You don't say how old your car is and I'm not that familiar with the S Class but the battery in the engine bay sounds like the SBS auxiliary battery - its a battery that powers the SBS brake system in case of electrical failure. The 'Starter' battery would be the big battery in the boot.

On the E Class MB were using SBS brakes up to 2006.

I've got the S-class myself and the battery under the bonnet is definitely the starter battery. The one hidden in the boot behind the panel is for all the electronics as this beast needs a lot of juice!

I used to have the E-class and was thinking the same but the S-class is a different setup I'm finding.

I'm in the middle of finding and fitting a new starter battery myself so probs go for the Bosch one. Tayna is top, I've used them before and would recommend. Quick delivery and much cheaper compared to the usual suspects :)

I have just purchased a genuine Merc AG main battery for my E320 2004. Its the heaviest battery I have ever lifted (even heavier than my BMW M5 battery). £141.92 for the correct spec battery from the main dealer. I was never gonna fit a lead acid battery even though I could get one for half the price. The main dealer was the cheapest I could find and he gave me a cheeky 10% discount.
