Need advice on a new laptop

I also bought a Samsung for my missus earlier this year and whilst the build quality isnt all that if it is used as a trrue portable compute device, the peformance, the graphics, the spec per pound is VERY good.

if it is general home use, with some photos iPhone syncing etc etc, then Samsung will serve you well as a good all rounder at a very good price

Yes, that's pretty much the case I think.

I had our MD's son one back a couple of months ago but the hard disk had failed. This can happen on any computer so not fair on Samsung to blame them.

However, it has stood up well to the riggers of a youngster using it.

Ours is still working perfectly.

If something more robust is required, perhaps a Dell Latitude 'Road Warrior' might be better...

once you go Mac, you don't go back :)

I'm not likely to buy another Mac when my current two finally expire.

And my employer doesn't keep Macs any more.

And I've noticed that a small design company near us has moved from 100% Mac to mixed.

I think there was a point around 2006-2008 where Apple could have pushed a bit harder to make more critical mass in the PC & laptop market - but they didn't. I get the impression that an opportunity was missed.

I had a Toshiba Qosmio - looked great but actually a pile of pooh!
Cost me nearly £2K and died one month after warranty expired - after
creating a stink with Toshiba Customer Services, they repaired it for
about £400 ... it lasted another 6 months and died again.

Was considering a DELL but was put off by pushy salesman who told me
that their machines would "outlive" any others on the market .... he told me
at least 2 years.

So bought a cheap Lenovo ... and after 18 months it's still going strong.

Yes but the Samsung did not even look good,it looked very cheap.I only bought it because it's spec and even that was not true as they had advertised it wrong
It said 8gb ram and 2x750 hard drive and it turned out to be 750hd instead of 2x750
Lucky I took a picture of the label on the shelf as by the time I went back (weeks later when the laptop started playing up) they had corrected their mistake and told me all they can do is replace the laptop with the same one

If they have sold you something which has been mis-described then you can request your money back under the Sale of Goods Act. So unless they can replace it with the correct item you should demand your money back. Speak to Trading Standards if they fail to do this.

Ta Charles but I've already have got an HP.The funny thing though is that when I said to them about when I bought the laptop the description said that it had 2x750 hard drive they kept telling I was wrong. They soon changed their mind but they did tell me that I should checked the details on the box before I left the shop :wallbash:

Anyway as I said got a HP instead and very happy with it (so far)

After 3 hps last year, and then thought about laptops i had in the past. The best was ibm thinkpad. What a shame i thought, they stopped making them. And of course a bit of scratching around discovered they're made under a name :) Lenovo.
So i bought one, and its just brilliant. Its just no fuss or drama. No problems and everything i do on it just works.
I will never by a hp one again.
Ok weird name and it wont win prizes, but looks great, runs cool, no fuss, and cheaper than many 'coloured' ones.

Just bought a Leveno for number 1 son for birthday/xmas. Good spec, reasonable price. Can't comment yet on durability as it has only been in use for 24hrs.

I bought my current Dell Alienware from Dell Laptops | Cheap and Refurbished Dell Laptops | LOWEST PRICE GUARANTEED

so far so good :)

edit: the recommendation is more for the discount website than the Alienware which may be over kill for your needs.

Alienware... I like you already!

I got mine from Cheapest Refurbished Dell & Alienware Laptops On The Web? Save £££'s! they look like the same company as you posted

I have a Dell Studio 17 which for me is simply a desktop replacement.

I don't need anything massively powerful but I do like a separate numeric pad and a 17" screen.

It's nearly 3 years old, but has had a ram chip fail, the DVD/CD just replaced and a new fan (sucked up too much fluff!).

All of the above taken care of on site with absolutely no fuss. I extended the warranty at expiry for £150 for 3 years, which is a bargain.

I've never had an issue with Dell customer service.

I used to support Stinkpads a while back (middle of last decade) and they were pretty good actually (T20/21 > T40something).

I would imagine Lenovo are similarly good.

My indy has one for his Star diagnostics and is getting on a bit but is fine.
