My satnav is many yrs old, difficult to identify location with full UK post codes. I need an updated version for my CLS 350.
Does anyone know how I can get one cheaply please?
My current one also keep asking me to turn right or left where there is no road at all. And would often ask me to turnaround needlessly. So presently rely on my phone.

Ebay . Buy one that resembles your original. Black front with proper silver back ... can be had for about £15

Maybe I didn't make myself clear. I am looking to update the software not a new hardware. Also I cannot play the music on my phone in the car. Mine is 2005 CLS 350 model.

im talking about a dvd disc.

Chances are your SatNav is COMAND NTG2.

Forum sponsors www.comandonline.co.uk would know what updates are possible (firmware, maps), contact them and they should be able to advise and supply whatever is needed.

Well you should have a NTG2 sat nav you can buy discs on ebay they are around £20 and are 2017/18,updating your sat nav will take time suggest it might take over 30 mins so the car has to be running, best of luck

^ I'd make sure those are OEM discs before putting a copied disc in the sat nav.
Too many places on eBay offering updated maps for £29 99 and its just another burnt copy.

Is the understanding that those eBay copies that may not be OEMs would not work properly in the car?

This is the assumption, yes.

MB protect the DVDs by crashing specific tracks on the optical media, and so when the software tries to read those specific tracks it expects to receive an error message, if it does not, then it assumes that the DVD isn't original. This method was first used to protect copyrighted software on floppy disks since the early eighties, BTW....

I don't know if the DVDs were fake, and someone tried to damage the tracks mechanically to overcome the copy protection (which would by silly because it can't be done this way), or these were genuine DVDs that somehow got damaged, or perhaps the optical drive just gave up the ghost when it did by complete coincidence, but either way it seems that a new optical drive is needed.

Well these copies do work in cars,it is up to you I suspect by now you may have the command quote,I hope it only has two zero's in it,you must make your mind up,I was fortunate to get a original disk for my Mercedes but do know others who have used copies with no problem,I just updated the DS5 sat nav for £20,itis slightly different in you give your vin and get a code to enter then the usb stick does it work and the latest maps and post code along with speed camera details,as I said in my last post best of luck.

Nothing wrong with the ebay discs . They are done using oem quality CDs. If you look at them you can clearly see they are not blue or green writable discs we can all buy from poundland.

I tried a copied disc a friend obtained in my E55 out of curiosity. The Comand unit got so hot I got shot of the disc and bought an OEM disc from the dealer.
The strange part was the disc itself was located in the boot, but the Comand unit in the car started to overheat when the mapping was running.

So you are saying you condone buying counterfeit goods?

On NTG2.5, the DVD is used only for copying the maps onto the internal HDD, and it is copy-protected (see my post above).

On older systems, where the maps remain on the CD media, the situation is different.

As for eBay, of course some people simply re-sell their original NTG2.5 DVDs once they have installed the maps onto to HDD, but eBay being eBay there's no way of knowing if the 'original' DVD you purchased is indeed original, or a very good fake (which won't actually work).

Add to this the fact that a genuine used original DVD may be scratched or otherwise physically damaged.

If what you are looking for is MB part number A219 827 27 00 Version 16 Navigation Update Comand APS 2019 (which is the last map update MB will issue for NTG2.5 apparently!) I have a genuine set I used to update the comand in my SLK (2008) after first getting comand.co.uk to install the firmware revision 09/29 that MB should have installed for free when servicing the car (for its first owner) in 2010 or 2012 - but did not. There should be a way of seeing if this is installed in the engineering menu of Comand, but despite getting instructions, I could not access that - but comand.co.uk did, and installed the 09/29 update for me, I then brought the car home and installed the 2019 maps from this DVD set, which is now surplus to requirements and available for a reasonable price!
