HI GUYS, NEW TO YOUR FORUM...
GOT SOME QUESTIONS IM SURE YOU GUYS COULD PROBABLY HELP ME WITH, JUST BOUGHT MY C CLASS TODAY, 1999 T REG. IT HAS THE AMG FLAT FACE 17" ALLOYS BUT I WOULD LIKE TO LOWER IT, CAN YOU LOT GIVE ME SOME ADVICE ON WHERE I CAN GET GOOD SPRINGS FROM? WHAT SHOULD I PAY? I WOULD LIKE IT TO SIT JUST HIDING ABOUT 10MM OF TYRE.

MANY THANKZ

Lowering

ManJ

Welcome to the Forum!

I'd probably be the first to recommend not lowering, but...

If there's an AMG spec that's low enough then the AMG springs (available through Mercedes dealers) would be the things to go for, ideally with the matching dampers

If that's not low enough (and I don't think it will be) then an Eibach, Bilstein or H&R kit may do the job. I think you'll need to replace the dampers as well as the springs to go as low as you want and maintain any kind of handling. If there's a Bilstein kit I'd get that - they make great dampers

Post some pics of your car before & after so we can see the results!

Hey, Cheerz Nick, One More Question Then... It Is A Esprit Model, This Means It Has A Lower Ride As Factory... For Example, If It Already Comes 20mm Lower Than A Standard One, And I Put 40mm Springs On It, Does That Mean It Will Go Only Another 20mm? Because If Thats The Case, I Need It To Drop Another 40mm To Look Wiked...
Please Reply

MANJ. CAN YOU STOP SHOUTING please. Normal conversation will get better results. Your car can handle brilliantly but the balance is not to screw up the ride in the process. If you go for the slammed look thats fine but I hope you know a good dentist ;)

Edit : If it helps my car sits about 28mm lower than a Classic or an elegance. I've got 16in wheels, 205 wide tyres, Sachs Super Touring Shocks, and no1 Spring caps. I still have a good ride!

Soz about the shouting, the thing is, i would like the car to sit JUS A LIL under the tire, so that the tire is tucked a little bit under the wing... what shall i do?

ok thanks mate, good advice!!! this 'Mercedes site' needs more people like you to cheer us on!

Manj, buy some H&R springs, availible via loadsa places, check the H&R website for retailers who will be ablt to order the ones you need, also search on this site for "springs", lowering, etc, you will find more info that way as most of these topics have been covered several times before, and I guess people just get fed up of repeating themselves! Let me know if you have no joy!

cheerz mate, il try that...

I don't advocate ruining the look and handling of a Mercedes by reducing the ride height so low part of the tyres can't be seen.

Lowering that far will place the roll centre at the front probably under the ground. Besides running the car on it's bumpstops, the roll centre sitting that low will reduce your grip levels significantly.

Besides that, it will look stupid as well, but that is my own opinion. Even Boy Racer Corsa drivers are starting to come back from the excessive lowering and only the ones with slightly reduced intelligence keep their cars like pogosticks.

But if you are set on scraping the floor (the car, not your knuckles) just go to Euro Car Parts and ask for the lowest springs they have. Their springs are made in Holland by a reputable spring company, using the correct Wafios cold coiler, with good quality chrome silicon wire (the same as H&R, Eibach etc.).When fitting them leave the spring pads out to get the lowest setting.

I hope you will turn your baseball cap the right way round and do right thing though.

Cheers,

Job

Each to there own guys!

my car is fairly low, not stupidly low, but fairly low, and so far everyone thats seen and been in it comments on how nice it looks! when ive got 3 people in the back, you cannot see the back tyre, otherwise you can.

handling is great, and ive never had a problem with hitting the bump stops or reduced grip levels, nor have I sufferred abnormal wear on my tyres. and I do drive some miles!

The only thing is the speed humps in london do sometimes scrape the bottom of the car.... but my standard golf 1.6 scrapes on them too!

stats007 - Totally disagree that descrete lowering ruins look or handling, it does in fact improve both, yes massive lowering will.

Said that, I partially agree that MB`s are not VW`s, ive seen VW`s dropped to the ground, would not suit MB`s.

ManJ, basically go descretly low, I think H&R`s go 40mm lower, which with 17`s and the #2 spring pads, should be the lowest you go! - again search on the forum and the answers are already there!

You're negating your own argument. Discrete is not so low that the tyres are partially hidden with no occupants.

A C36 AMG which runs slightly lower than standard

nice one mate, sorry, i am making it sound as if the cars going to be sittin on the ground, which is not the case! lol, what are spring pads?

another thing guys, i have the esprit model, which sits lower than the standard c class's by about 20mm from the factory, does that mean if i put on 40mm lowering springs i will only get another 20mm???

Manj, if you took the springs and spring pads out of any 202, and replaced them with identical springs and spring pads, they should sit the same height, again do a search on "spring pad".

As for the pic youve shown, its an american C36, they have a higher spring pad from factory to Euro ones, and i think (not sure) different springs too.

Basic apart from 18`s

After H&Rs

its slightly higher at the back now because i put a #3 spring pad instead on #2, but only enough to see a bit more of the tyre!

naa, way too high in the first pic! no surprisingly was all original paintwork, it looked a diff shade in the pics maybe the time of day , I have had them resprayed now ,I have the 210 mirrors, and the indicators blanked.

Mambo`s is a better picture!

I am going to have pad#4 put on my rears - i can carry 5 in my car from time to time, plus a baby seat and a boot full of shopping plus a big pram!!

But - i am not one for silly lowered cars, but these mbs need some slight modification imo. Have a look in the members gallery for my c320 and see what you think - the back is way too low for my liking so the only way of resolving the non tyre look is to go as high as possible for me.
