New abolish Road Tax Petition

...Of course those with a high annual mileage will be against the idea, while those with a low mileage and currently high rated car will be for it....

Aye, and that's why direct democracy just doesn't work.....

Interesting to see an erroneous apostrophe in a post from one of our members criticising the English language skills of the petition's author!

But that's irrelevant here. Of course those with a high annual mileage will be against the idea, while those with a low mileage and currently high rated car will be for it. My thinking is that loading the fuel tax will be more effective at reducing pollution than the current rating system, which after all is what we're told it's all about. Those people concerned about the higher fuel tax may cut down on unnecessary miles, the best way there is to reduce pollution. Conversely, I know someone who deliberately uses his BMW 335 more than necessary because he's "paid a fortune to tax it so needs to get some money's worth". I think we should return to a flat rate VED, but only around £50, whilst upping fuel tax. The VED is useful for keeping track of ownership, MoT, insurance, etc.

He means you Moonloops.:D

My car, in the Republic of Ireland, would cost over 1800 Euro pa to tax. We are lucky here.

Careful, some posters get very sensitive over comments like that and start swearing and chucking unpleasant personal insults about. :D

What's worse is I've gone back over the thread to weed out the erroneous apostrophe and can't see it! Now it's driving me mad. :-(

The problem there is that, without a shadow of a doubt, the £50 would creep....and creep, and creep.....upwards until we'd be paying a very similar 'flat rate' to current VED rates and the seperate tax on fuel. Politicians wouldn't be able to resist it!

Did you write the Remain campaign's projections for if we left the EU? Without a shadow of doubt we'd be faced with Armageddon after a period of plague and pestilence!

Actually, did you know that we're already paying more for fuel than we did in the 60s? Frightening isn't it? It's a good thing that those nasty politicians aren't controlling house prices or we'd have seen them go up in the last 50 years too!

I'd like it direct on fuel as I only do around 8 or 9k a year, but part of what puts me off buying a nice big V8 is I simply object to paying 500 quid a year just for the privelege.

Sometimes, stating the obvious is just....so obvious. That obvious, really, that some people miss it when they have a 'good idea'. Or am I stating the obvious...?!

Obviously...

Well I'm accustomed to a smooth ride
Or maybe I'm a dog who's lost its bite
I don't expect to be treated like a fool no more
I don't expect to sleep through the night
Some people say a lie's a lie's a lie
But I say why
Why deny the obvious child?

Some posters find your particular level of sarcasm (not humour) which is directed at them personally, very upsetting. These same posters that you choose to mock and ridicule, struggle with their dyslexia but usually manage to conquer it without the need for others to point it out to an entire forum.

One of these posters that you choose to mock from your own lofty position above the moral high ground, has taken the time on several occasions to point out to you, how your mocking of an affliction, that was neither asked for or wanted, causes great personal feeling.

I use the word feeling in recognition of your inability to recognise how hurtful your continued mocking is.

I like to think that we are a "broad church" here. In 2016 I thought we had risen above mocking afflictions. You Sir are obviously stuck in the past.

Look at your history (as I have asked you to do before). Your insistence on posting, as in here, remarks that have absolutely no bearing on the OP! single you out as somebody who deserves our pity.

Yes Lewyboy. I refer to you.

I think road tax is a good* test to see if you are buying an economic and environmentally friendly car. Therefore without it would you pay attention??

*problem I have with the current approach is that there are other pollutants that we ignore, I am no expert in this field, is it NOX levels?? Anyway, I would prefer to see a more comprehensive and effective list and testing that is linked to a graded tax approach. (One that car companies cannot fake!!)

However, agree on the mileage issue as me myself only do 6-8k pa in my 3 litre twin turbo that's rarely in ecopro mode! ;)

Are you dyslexic?

Seriously, that might explain why you use vile language so readily.
