New CLS

Drove my 250 to Antwerp and back this week. Enjoyed every minute. The sat Nav worked great showing all speed limits and cameras.

Returned 49 mpg overall. Great I thought since much of the journey was at 130kph and a fair amount of stop start rush hour traffic.

was the sb you tried a 250 or 350?

I recall reading the 219 had a worse drag coefficient than the 211, possibly similar thing with the new generation? Not great figures really for a steady cruise.

350.

The coupe is 0.26, the SB is 0.31. A noticeable difference.

Tried a SB today, got 34mpg over an 80 mile test drive at mainly CC 74mph indicated.
I thought I was doing well until I turned into the wind and lost 10mpg. I also noticed more wind noise compared to my car.

As far as sunroofs...no thanks. :)

Positive points.
Nice car, refined,, quick enough for overtaking, stop start function.

Negative points,
Seat bolsters pinched my ribs, wind noise, economy, steering lacked feedback.

What's with the economy gauge only going up to 40mpg..??

Were they "Comfort" seats? If so a bit of tweaking should sort the pinch. Wind noise could be the window(s) need adjusting.

40mpg, in my wildest dreams!! ;) :D

These are AMG (LOL) Sports seats. It's the second set I've sat in where the bolsters pinch my ribs.

Wind noise wasn't the window fit, but round the A pillars when facing the wind.
My car doesn't do that.

40mpg isn't just in your dreams, it looks like a 350Cdi can't manage it either. I was somewhat disappointed by that.

The W211 is 0.26 - 0.27 depending on tyres

Perhaps you need to seek out a car spec'd with Comfort seats?

Maybe.

The problem is that my own car is so comfortable, it's hard to find a new one as good.

If the trip consumption meter on the CLS is as accurate as it is on my W212, then it was probably nearer 31-32mpg - which is pretty p*ss poor.

That's interesting. Assuming you mean the instantaneous graph on the COMAND display, it goes up to 50mpg on my W212.

Wow, that's pretty significant: a 19% increase in drag! Shows what a difference the extended roofline on the SB makes.

FWIW, here's the consumption of my W212 since I bought it new, based on brim-to-brim fills. The cumulative average over 32k miles is 38.1mpg, with a best of 42.9 and a worst of 38.1 Probably the most interesting feature is how the consumption increases dramatically during the colder months. My daily commute is 23 miles each way, mostly on fast A- and B-roads. I do very little sitting in traffic and my driving style is smooth, but brisk. My car has the 265bhp engine and 7G+ 'box, but no stop/start.

This was the bar display in the speedometer.

I was unpleasantly surprised at the lack of economy, especially as I did a good even speed distance on a long dual carriageway and then through town outbound and inbound, but made sure the stop/start function was being used.

I have to say, I did like the stop/start function, especially as it is totally controlled by the driver.
Press the brake lightly enough to hold the car and it kept running, apply a bit more pressure and it cut out until taking my foot off the brake pedal, press a bit more and engage HOLD and it stayed cut out until pressing the accelerator or the brake to release HOLD.

Hi sorry to interrupt your subject but while on the subject of this whole stop/start & HOLD thing I have a 2010 E coupe 350cdi with Distronic, now I'm unsure what the 'P' on the dash stands for?? but if I push the brake firmly when stationary it does hold the car so should the engine cut out too??

Your car doesn't have ECO function, so no Stop/Start.

The P (in blue)means it has seen a suitable parking space.

square blue box with a P? - parktronic, automatic parking system

D/N/R with P to the side - electronic gearbox park brake

DM, (volvo ref) only jesting, but this being my first MB, I have no reference against other models. The CLS SB is the best car I've driven, and perhaps in 2 years time I'll be looking at the CL, which I believe is a step up again in refinement.

Well that's clever how does this function work?

The gear selector P is gearbox Park, not the parking brake, which is still a manual pedal affair.

I fancy a CL but they only come with petrol engines so are just too juicy to use as a work hack.
The CLS is a lovely car, it's just a shame about the seat bolsters being a bit tight, the steering is lifeless and the fuel economy is dismal.
All these items are better in my old clunker.

the three negatives you state I don't experience

it's a funny old game..

I'm probably a bit larger than you so feel the seat bolsters are too tight. Likewise the issue of sunroofs, they are a none starter due to taking headroom.

The steering is definitely a bit dead feeling compared to my older E class and even more so compared to my old Citroens.

Fuel economy? Don't you think the figures you and STPhil gave make pretty shocking reading.
My old car does better and I was looking for an improvement.
