Best Speed Camera Warning App

Me neither....no speeding points since 1989!.....and I'm not some slow old duffer either.....just got to choose the right places.....and be a bit lucky to be honest!!!! Been given "the talk" by roadside coppers a couple of times though!!! No electronic aids used!!
Obviously I'll get pulled/flashed on the way home now I've said that!!!

The way I see it is if 'They' are using all the technology to catch us, then we can use 'All the technology' to avoid them!
So glad I had the 70s 80s and 90s with fast cars and Sportsbikes and no technology.
Just looking out for 'Jam Sandwiches'!
Northumberland roads offered 150+ mph daily!
Fast flowing roads, up through the borders and into Scotland, with minimal traffic.
Pure racetracks.
Most car drivers expected to be overtaken and had good road manners.
The Police owned nothing back then, that could chase a Sportsbike, let alone catch one!

You must have seen "limits" like this on gantries.....they are every motorway??

I mostly use 'smart motorways' now ... maybe those are different. Can't see why they would ever post an advisory limit when putting up a mandatory one is a guaranteed money-maker?

The older single square matrix signs I'm thinking of can only show an advisory limit AFAIK as they're not able to display a red circular border round the number. These are the ones that can also say 'fog', 'ice' or 'end'. The gantry ones show the round NSL sign rather than 'end'.

You surely understood the point ? I have no points on my licence. How about you ?
Ditto.

I understood your point very well; you disapprove of speeding. What has that to do with the relative merits of speed camera warning apps?

We do drive rather different cars, of course. I have a preference for the great hairy-chested V8 creatures of a decade or more ago; you drive a four-pot diesel, and moreover, feel the need to tell us that it is an "E-Class Estate E220d AMG Line Premium 5dr 9G-Tronic." Perhaps there's a clue there?

There's room for everybody. You tend to your field, sunshine, and I'll tend to mine.

PS that looks like an old picture to me. From Google maps for (I think) the same junction on the M4 now:

You can clearly see those are able to display a red circle where the simple matrix ones in your picture aren't - the number essentially uses the whole display:

Also there's only a single light in each corner now - AFAIK those can only flash red, in conjunction with a 'X' in the middle for lane closed. I think you need amber lights for an advisory limit (as above)?

I have no need of any navigation function, and I like the simplicity of the basic Ooono (just Ono in Germany, I think); no need to have the smartphone handy in a cradle or anything like that, so the dashboard remains (relatively) uncluttered, and very simple to operate. I've ordered one, and will set the sensitivity after I've driven past a few speed cameras. Apart from that, it's just fit and forget (until the battery needs changing) unless it goes off...

I’m using Blitzer.de Pro, works great. Tested in trips around Europe but not in UK.

My Hyundai displays speed camera warnings on the HUD, including distance to the camera. This feature is independent of the navigation, I.e. it's 'always on', even when not using the car's satnav. But, obviously, it's based only on a database, and so, unlike Wase or Google Maps etc, it won't alert regarding mobile speed cameras. The database is updated regularly using the car's built-in 5g connection and I find it to be very accurate.

My Suzuki, on the other hand, has no such thing, and since I don't usually drive it with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connected, I mostly do not have any warning regarding speed cameras while driving the Suzuki.

In summary, I do find the alerting on the Hyundai helpful, but at the same time I'm also fine driving the Suzuki without the speed camera alerts. And, I think it's obvious that eventually all new cars will be 'connected cars' (like the Hyundai) and the need for additional devices for speed camera alerting will gradually disappear over time.

There is one thing to consider that I can’t see anyone else has mentioned, the OP has an iPhone 5S - I’d be surprised if any of the apps mentioned on this thread will even install, let alone work on a phone they is at best 11 generations out of date.

They’re only a money maker if you happen to pass one above the posted limit that has cameras installed?

As far as I know, no smart motorway in the country uses rear mounted Gatso’s any more - they’re all digital and clearly visible on the left.

A simple case of slow down and speed up, if you happen to be above the limit? That is what I (allegedly) do……

Then the OP needs a new phone!

It's not as simple as that.

Speed cameras are meant to deter people from speeding. A speed camera that racks-in the fines, is clearly not doing it's job.

Yes, the punitive element does work, in the sense that drivers caught speeding will likely be more careful in future, however this is a secondary benefit - the primary purpose of these safety cameras is to prevent speeding in the first place.

In this sense, the best camera is the one that generates no revenue at all.

Interesting that it's a German app when in Germany it is forbidden to use GPS navigation systems that warn you about speed cameras.

Maybe the data is deleted for Germany.

Much as I hate to say it, it's easy to argue a different point of view.

I was/am firmly in the camp that said cameras should be clearly visible, so that they become an effective deterrent at known accident black spots, but surely the constant threat of missing a camera is what helps to make people drive within the limits at all times.

"...in the sense that drivers caught speeding will likely be more careful in future...". This too.

Presumably to reinforce the 'constant threat' intention. Can't argue with the logic.

But given that a lot of people will use Google Maps for navigation, which has this built in, would they check that you have disabled that feature if ever you were pulled over?

....and not just GPS ones...

"In Germany, it is legal to own speed camera detection devices but illegal to use in a moving vehicle. Penalties for use when driving in Germany include a fine, destruction of the detector and points on your licence."

Well, they do deter me from speeding past a given gantry. But as long as conditions are good and traffic is favourable, I don't see a reason to stay at 70, at least not if I want to make any meaningful progress before the next set of roadworks/heavy traffic.

But it's not a 'speed camera detection device'. The alerts are based on a database, no 'detection' takes place.
