My Father-in-law has recently been burgled and one of his cars from the garage taken. They also tried to take his 1989 SL300, but the immobiliser did the trick. Trouble is, they made off with the keys for the Merc, so he now wnats to get the locks and ignition replaced.

Does anyone know the general cost of having this done? I have been looking and autolocksmiths reckon they can change exisiting locks and recut keys to fit...anyone tried this method???

Your help would be appreciated!

If someone had walked away with the keys I would recommend that a complete lock set be bought from your dealers. Not cheap I admit, but what price do you put on the car?

Covered by insurance anyway, surely?

Your big problem is that to remove the ignition barrel you will need an original key since the thing has to be turned to position #1 to insert the barrel removal tool(s). If the thing has it's original lockset then a new key can be got from Merc on the owner providing passport, V5, some other proof of personal identity, DNA sample, three fingers from right hand.etc etc.

Sorry...last two are facetious but you get the drift.

Original new key £15, :D Then get a new lock set :thumb:
