New (for me) E320 CDI Sport Estate

What is DPF?

Lovely car, my better half has one with seats at the rear, keyless go, easy tail gate.

A fab drive and the power for a diesel is superb

ENJOY

107k miles on a 3/4 year old car will likely be similar or better mechanical/cosmetic condition to many 5/6 year old cars with 50/60k miles IMHO.

I'd say that it was very good value for such a well specced and modern car, and as you say if you're keeping it for a few years the mileage will even out nicely.

6k miles PA onto this 107k car over the next five years = 137k miles on a 8/9 year old car. By which time most 8/9 year old diesel 211s will be 100k+ anyway I should think, so the value will be similar.

Saves you a packet on depreciation, and lower initial outlay :)

HAVING DONE LOTS OF SOUL SEARCHING Thats the model I would like in either 280 or 320 version. All the ones I looked at last year have a small SPORT logo in the usual position on the front wings.

What is DPF?

DPF is a set of letters that are worth paying attention to when buying a modern diesel. It is a way to reduce emissions - which is great - but the technology is not mature enough (imho) and there have been huge problems across lots of manufacturers - some more than others. One of the possible side effects of the DPF system is that excess diesel is transferred to the engine sump oil (yes you read that right) and there are warning lights to tell you to take the car to the dealer for an oil change - because the oil level is getting too HIGH! Of course the danger is then that the engine starts to run on its own sump oil and the rest you can imagine.

So for me DPF = no way Jose I would rather buy a petrol car.

BTW Ray would be interested in your views on the Sport model and the ride compared with the Avantgarde or elegance models.

Looks great, and by the pictures it seems like it's good condition too.

107K is just broken in, It's a CDi, they are alot stronger than petrol engines (I was told that by an MB mechanic) they will go on forever and ever if you take care good care of them and MB service history etc.. you won't have any trouble engine wise!

Edit; i've seen a 2001 E320 CDi on 550K running no different than a 40-50K CDi

Was that the pre or post facelift Pan Man? PS. did you get your mats ok?

My friends Citroen C4 did that and the engine went up in a cloud of black smoke out the exhaust ;)

I hope i am not tempting fate but both my wifes Audi a2 and my 55reg c320cdi both have a DPF. No issues or problems to date, just ensure garages independent or main use correct oil (low ash 229.51 or 229.31 me thinks)

Thanks for that, I am pretty sure that my new car does not have one. This is pure luck on my part as it was not something that I was looking for.

Collected the car today and drove it home over 200 miles. First impressions are really good. It had been valeted after my purchase and looked really nice. Drove home in snow and sleet and salt so it now needs cleaning.

From memory my old 320CDI 211 (sold last year)feels faster, but I don't think that it is.
This V6 is just so quiet and a lot more refined that you do not realise how fast you are going sometimes.

The sport suspension is very complient and does not seem any harder than my '03 Avantgarde in a straight line, however it is noticeable on cornering and the car stays nice and flat.
Computer read 39.6 mpg on the 220 mile drive back from Hull to Essex, maybe a little more juicy than the Il6 motor but still very good

I'd be surprised if it doesn't have one, mines a 55 Sport and does.

It is not recorded on the build sheet, so I thought it did not have one.

I am taking it to Richard at Gemtech on Friday so I will know for sure then.

Thanks...

I guess they could have stopped putting them on, but if it was a new technology you would think all the newer cars (Diesel) would have one.

PS. have you found the hidden cup holders in the rear armrest? Took me a while before I realised they were there.

seems to be hit and miss with the DPF , my 2009 model doesnt have them

PRM The "Sports" I looked at were all post face lift. The mats arrived the following day, thanks it was bank holiday & snow held them up for a day. Not fityted them as I have decided to change the car so they can go in the new one.

Another way of establishing if DPF fitted is look at underside of top engine cover. If recommended oil is stated as 229.31 or 229.51 then certain it has one

Or if your tail pipes are sooty. Pan Man thats strange, mines the facelift and hasn't got the " Sports" logo, and the other one i looked at in the dealers didn't have them either. Got me going now, i'll be looking at every Sport i see.
