Seasons Greetings All

After finally sobering up I decided to change my long overdue fuel filter in my S320 cdi W220 (2001).

Changing it was not an issue and the old one didn't look as bad as I thought it would but now the car is not starting. I suspect there is air in the system. Is it just a case of cranking it until it fires up?

My reserve light is on so I am going to get some fuel and top up the tank. When I tried starting it first time with the new filter it fired up but then cut out after 10 seconds.

Sounds like its full of air and as your tank is low on fuel , gravity cannot top the filter up

Just a thought, are you able to fill up the filter it'self so as it'll start up more or less straight away & pull the fuel through from the tank ?

D

It shouldn't be to hard to start, if it hasn't started after some persistent cranking then you may not of sealed it properly when screwing the top on?

The lift pump is a mechanical pump on the front of the engine. You should have filled the filter with fuel before attempting to start the engine, then give it long cranks until it fires.

I will get some extra fuel today and fill the filter as there was some in there when I initially changed the filter which is the reason it probably fired up the first time.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I will let you know the outcome.

I place a mixture of new diesel & injector cleaner into a cleaned out fairy liquid bottle, then when the filter is fixed into the holder fill the filter directly from the bottle, simples !

Again hope this little tip helps :thumb:

It's Mrs Dave that goes mad when I steal her wash up liquid bottle LOL

Gave it one last attempt before heading off for some extra fuel and it kicked in at the last second. Pumped the accelerator a few times in the process. Thanks for all the advice.

Empty washing up liquid bottle is definitely going on the tool shelf in the garage.
