220CE COUPE,,
read through the posts for gear knob,, nothing i could find about removing the gear knob from the gear lever shaft on a 220ce,, does it just screw off the shaft or will i just have to hack away at the knob till i'm just left with the shaft,,??,, here's the one i want to use,,

wheres the pic? does it come with a lever or without?

Twist the collar under the knob through 90 deg anti-clockwise. The knob will then lift off the shaft.

then the new knob won't fit..

Its an angled rod that attaches under the gate onto the gearbox on the w124's i think... at least it does on mine , the angled rod and the knob are bonded to one another and it has a thread on the 'gearbox' end that you screw on....after you have removed all the trim surrounding it ;)

IIRC....

so i'll have to do what i thought,, take the g/lever shaft out and whittle the old g/knob off,, then i can put the new knob on the bare shaft,, was hoping the old knob would just unscrew,, just means a bit more work,,

COUPE FREAK I don't think you wil be able to do that. Check out this thread for more info.

I bought that pre-facelift knob and shaft (one unit) from Alps but have not fitted it yet. The new knob you have won't fit yours. You will have to purchase a whole new knob/shaft all-in-one unit similar to the pic below:

Pic borrowed from eBay seller victor_mk - Also a member here and seller of 'fine' knobs :D

think i'll still have a go at whittling the old knob off, then araldite or super glue etc,, the new knob on,, cant see why it wont work,,

it all sounds a bit "carry on" ;)

Before you go doing anything drastic to your present gear knob be aware that what you have bought is for a manual car and want you have is an automatic.
As far as I'm aware the 2 are incompatible. If you're just going to saw the old off and glue the new on be prepared for the day when it comes off in your hand.

Also beware, if you saw the old one off, there might be a chance, due to the vibrations
the bottom attachment might get affeceted, i thought of what you are planning to do, but opted out and left it.

The W202 changed shiftknob style twice during production, the first ones had the W124/W201 style knobs/shaft, the last had the W210/W220 etc type knobs but the ones in between had a separate shaft/knob that would be compatible with models before and after if modified.

This mod IS possible, but pointless for my own car. If someone wants it to happen then please let me know :)

not doing it in the car,, taking the g/lever shaft completely out of the car,,

is that glass half full or half empty,,

LOL !! seriously though it will happen....

I pulled my 'aftermarket carbon look gear knob ' off my CRX ages ago, after i had done just what you said , glueing it on....

It was as i was decelerating hard coming up for a roundabout on the A303, slamming it from 4th to 3rd and it just tore off in my hand, and for a moment i was dumbfounded and just looked at it .....

Very funny now, but scary then....

why not just ebay it and then buy the correct one ?

I'm sure Victor will be pleased to supply one of his. Member's discount maybe?

cant see me slamming my auto box about like a manual,, & i like the knob i've just bought,, to make sure it stay's on i will drill and tap a thread in the side of the alloy piece on the bottom of the knob & fit a pointed grub screw,, but if that g/lever shaft KLP 92 has shown is'nt too expensive,, i might go for that,,

Paul why not "whittle" the old knob off then THREAD the bare bar and screw on the new knob? Wont vibrate off, wont pull off and the glue you were going to use can be used on something else :D
