New gearbox on a W202 at 47k!!!

Gearbox repaired

Well I got the call this afternoon that the gearbox has been repaired. The car's still to have a lengthy test drive before I can uplift it tomorrow afternoon but the two short test drives today were both okay. I'll get a break down of exactly what's been done when I get the car back but I know that a worn hardware part had to be replaced after the box had been stripped down.

Total price incl. VAT - £1,420.00

That's a shocking £1,780.00 less than the dealers quote to get the car back on the road. No wonder MB were so low down in the recent Top Gear survey!!! Shame on you!!!

Unfortunately (for us) MB's policy is usually to replace a faulty auto gearbox whole rather than strip it down and replace the faulty components within the box itself, e.g. Valve chests, hyraulic actuators, torque converter etc.

Glad you got it sorted, ouch still a mighty bill though :( Auto boxes have a habbit of being exbenzive when they go wrong

Mobile again

Well I’ve been driving the car since lunch time yesterday and I’m delighted to say it’s like a driving a new car. The gearbox is quieter than it’s ever been, the gear changes are slicker and smoother and the car seems more responsive.

When I went to pick it up I was shown a worn Stator Assembly and was told that one of the internal ‘rings’ had been loose causing wear to the ‘teeth’ over quite a long period of time (sorry I use laymans terms).

The Assembly was replaced and due to the mileage of the car my Torque Converter was drained, flushed and re-fitted.

I have a ‘check up’ in 1000 miles time and then a gearbox service at 6000 miles to make sure everything is hunky dory. It was suggested that a service of the gearbox should be done every 2 years and at only £75 it’s something I’ll definitely be doing from now on.

A big thank you goes to Automotive Automatics who were great throughout my mini nightmare… anyone in the Central Scotland Area can find them at 14 Gordon Street, Leith, Edinburgh and I was delighted with the service received from them.

Unfortunately I feel a bit miffed with my local Western Dealer… charging me £80 for a full hours labour only to tell me I ‘needed’ a new gearbox without suggesting another possible avenue to explore was a bit cheeky. If I'd been a bit more gullible I may well have given them more than double for a new gearbox when only the stator assembly was required!!!

That sounds like great customer service from Automotive Automatics (try saying that after a few beers ;) ).

Still, that's a lot of money to spend at only 47k miles

did yoy all know most garages sub contract work out to certain specialist read the small print when you book your car in my specialist has loads of work on sub contract from main agent mbz why pay for mbz stamp and work no better often not fixed first time and costs ££££££££
