New laptop decision

I'm currently trying to type on my HP DV9088EA Laptop.

Big screen, nice spec but like the HP support this machine utter Sh**e.

It has a season ticket at the local repair shop and it has crashed that many times I have now lost my no claims bonus...

^^ I would not buy another HP either. I have an 18month old one that the wireless network card packed up on.

Got a Dell XPS M1330 last month and it's been perfect so far. SSD harddrive, superfast.

Actually decided on an Acer in the end and came in well under what I was originally going to spend.

Nice enough spec for what I will use. As I dont play games or bother with much high end graphics stuff the shared video memory wont cause me any problems

Acer 5735 series
Intel Core Duo 2Ghz
15.6"
4Gb Ram
500GB HDD

Also recommending Dell. I use them pretty much exclusively for the companies I work for and my current home PC is also a Dell. Good kit, good price. Support... well, I haven't needed to use their tech support for home users in years, but last time I used it they were pretty good. I know their business support is excellent.

Last time I used Dell Home Support it was hopeless - friend phoned them about a pink line on the LCD. They quickly rendered the machine unusable - at which point I got a call and was able to fix quickly. All they could come up with was restoring the machine from the recovery partition (and setting up the machine from scratch).

A further call call didn't help as they couldn't grasp the the concept of plugging the LCD into another machine to check if it was the screen or graphics card/drivers. And could only still suggest a re-install as that's all their script's told them. Anyway I tried this and screen was fine, re-installed graphics drivers and all was fixed (I was amazed that this wasn't on their script).

Hahah. That's definitely a bad experience. Shame. Last time I used them was when I had a lemon of an Inspiron laptop. In the one year I had it it went back for:

- 3x hard drives
- 2x DVD/CDRW drives
- 2x mainboards
- 1x keyboard

It spent more time with Dell than it did with me! At the end of the year, I spoke to a manager at Dell who agreed with me that the machine would probably break again once it was outside it warranty period. I asked him for a new laptop, different model with the same accessories (I had four batteries, docking port, top specification in the laptop itself). He said no, but refunded me in in full! £3,107!

Heap of crap laptop, but I couldn't fault the service. I've had numerous Dells since, both desktops and laptops and can't fault the hardware at all these days. They did go through a phase a few years ago (their blue and grey phase) of designing absolute crap which fell apart quickly or was just plain unreliable, but since they lost their spot as number one desktop/laptop supplier in the world, they've done some soul searching and started coming up with good products.

Dell ? Oh no ! I`ll never buy nothing from Dell. Even the new series laptops are crap( PcPro forced survey ). Dell Support will take you to the South India :).
I`m using HP Ltd Editions, IBM Lenovo SL400 and Sony Tz/Tx series.
If you want one for home use, try laptopsdirect.co.uk or any PCWorld on Sunday around 3pm before they close and bargain the price. Have your money in cash with you and ask for Duty manager. They`re desperate for a sale. Last sunday bought 2 laptops from PcWorld Business: HP nv3000 and IBm lenovo Sl400 with £ 1100 cash VAT inc. Good eh? :) Both laptops are sold separately at around £ 750 each :).

Happy buying :bannana:
