Hi guys

I took delivery of an ML320CDI Sport this week.

Ive started to notice that when moving slowly in traffic the gearchange from 1st to 2nd is not smooth there is a definate slight 'lurch' forward when accelerating slowly and the same seems to happen on occasions when braking down with a noticable gearchange at say 10-20mph.

Firstly is this normal ? if not is it likely to settle (ive done about 400 miles)

Thanks
Mark

Hi!

I think it depends how you accelerate. Have you got switch C for comfort or only S for sport on your gearbox?
If you have C I'm sure that car starts form 2nd gear and doesn't touch even 1st unless you will do KICK-DOWN.

Cheers

Hi Chris ....

The ML doesnt have the C/S switching....... it only happens when in traffic from from a stop and then very slow accelaration .... if I move off from stop at a 'normal' speed its fine, my non technical understanding of the 7 speed gearbox is that it skips gears when neccesary so in the 'normal' circumstance it could go from 1st to 3rd ? ... (in sure someone will correct me if thats incorrect)

The non smooth change seems to go against everything I have read about the 7 speed being so smooth.

Thanks

Mark

Ok, but are you sure that you always start from 1st gear then?
Lest see what other ML owners will say.

Cheers

Cant be sure .... but I assume so as there is no indicator (that I know of )that shows what gear its in...

Take it to a dealer and get them to update the software. It is a popular complaint and can be rectified.

The gearbox may have to be re-adapted too.

Thanks ..... Will do ...... speaking as a non technical person :) .... what does 're -adapted' actually mean ?

Thanks

The fill rates for the hydraulic valves and the speed of gear selection can be 'adapted'.
This alters the way the gearbox selects gears.

Beat me to it and as you say it was a common fault that I believed had been rectified? Is this a new ML for you, or a new vehicle that has only just been built??

Regards
John

I have the same problem with the gaerbox on my ML, Im waiting until the service is due to get the software update.

I test drove a new 204. 300 miles on the clock. The down changes were awful from 3rd to 2nd. It has the same box BTW
