New SLs going cheap from MB Dealers

worrying isn't it, when this applies to the 'glamorous' SL :o :o

This year, MB new car sales were reported to be down 8% to date, so look out for some real bargains as they attempt to clear the stockpile of unsold cars.

I'm shocked at the price on your SL Tony - that is a rare, stunning car - probably unique in the UK with the Performance Pack. Unreal.

Is the Porsche the new model Turbo ? (Is that out yet ?)

Sadly no. I have settled for a 996 series 911 Turbo S Cabriolet which is 5 months old until the 997 Turbo S Cabriolet version is available mid next year.

All in all we have bought 5 Porsche cars and ditched all of the MB vehicles that we had as a family.

Christmas has come very early for your Porsche dealer !

That's funny as I/we did it the other way around :D .

I too got a fair old whack off my wifes new SL350 that I bought her a short time ago. I just sat in the dealers and said "make me buy this car" , (after having been given the nod by a MB buyer friend of mine) and lo and behold it worked. Couldn't be happier and it just makes you feel like you really got value for money when you get a hefty discount, which is nice.

I have the next gen Nissan GTR on order but bet I'll be paying top dollar for that one  .

Back on track of the thread, tonight we were looking at secondhand SL55 Prices.

One dealer is offering a 55 plate SL55 with F1 performance pack and 5,000 miles on the clock at £99,000.

Why would anyone want to buy that car when a new one could be bought for £107,000 less £10,000 discount ?

Probably because there are still some buyers who do not/can't be bothered to scour the web for the best prices and generally do not haggle, so dealers being the opportunists they are hope one of these buyers will walk in. Plus it gives them more opportunity to give a decent part ex price probably to one of the above buyers. Strangely enough there are still a lot of people around like the ones mentioned above.

Just out of interest, being the curious type I am, I decided to check with a few MB dealers how much they would pay for my wifes 3 month old SL. The best bid was 44K, and that was about a month ago, and the reason a lot of them gave was the discounts available on new. No suprises really.

Mercedes are going to learn the hard way that it takes a generation to get a reputation for quality, but it can be destroyed in a few years and it is then exceedingly difficult to get it back. I bought a Merc for basically three reasons. I thought the car would have good residuals, be reliable and well made. These have all proved to be mistaken. I have also been taken aback by their attitude to customer "service". As Clarkson said of the Mercedes dealers, "these people hate you". Never again.

the discount on SL55s is about £13k ..

Just priced it through drivethedeal for the same spec, and it came out at 56412, so the MB dealer still came up trumps
