Just had the AA out for what I thought was a dead battery as the engine would not turn over after sitting on the drive since Friday. I didn't bother trying to charge or jump start the car as the battery on the CL600 is a beast and would not dare mess about with electrics on the car. The mechanic checked battery voltage and said it was over 12volt which would indicate it's OK. Tried to start a few times with a jump lead from his truck and all we could hear was a "click" which indicates starter motor jammed or stuck. I have had no indications of starter motor starting to go so a little strange, but there you are.

I'm told a new one is around £1000. The question is, where is the best place to get a new starter motor for the CL600? The dealer? Indies? other parts sources? It's W215 2003/04 model. Grateful for any ideas.

Yes, you are right, £1000 sounds silly! That's the price I was told dealer would charge for parts and labour. Perhaps it's a difficult job to do on a CL?
Mel.

The cost will be labour, i bet its not easy to get to on a cl600!

The official time is 2 hours but i doubt it could be done in that time...

Is that not for a 140?
Thanks everyone.

This one is advertised as suitable for a w215 (99-06), looks almost identical, with £100 cash back:

MERCEDES-BENZ CL600 6.0 1999 2006 STARTER MOTOR | eBay UK

I will contact local dealer tomorrow to get a price for new and to fit.

I just remembered something like this happened about 9 months ago, but when I went back to the car the next day it started first time. Never thought anything of it and completely forgot about it afterwards. Anyone experienced this?

I would take it to a good auto electrician who can do an accurate diagnosis, and a quote for a repair on your starter or a refurbished one.

Most starters can be reconditioned for max £100. The one on ebay is a standard aftermarket part which you will get from your local auto store or Euro Car Parts/GSF/Andrew Page etc.

I had a problem where my cl55amg wouldnt start and it was the crank position sensor. could be the same problem, it only cost me £35 from ECP and 10mins to fit!...

Did the engine turn over but not start? or not turn over at all? Mine does not turn over on ignition, nothing, just a "clicK' sound from under the engine bay.

To be completely honest im not positive.... you might find more help on benzworld.org, there is a specific section on there for w215 CL's. Sorry I cant be more help

I would want a more accurate diagnosis than an AA man. If your battery has gone completely dead then it could still be the cause. I would suggest a load test on the battery and not just a simple 12v measurement. And if that checks out I would still want to see a bit more diagnosis like check the earth connections etc. Seems too easy to blame the starter motor.

Update: Car wad taken to Mercedes specialist today and after putting under diagnosis (don't ask what) was told it needs a new starter motor. Was quoted £650 all in. The motor itself was £270 new from Mercedes parts. Will be fitted tomorrow.
