525d msport, 320cd msport
Hi all,

I am looking to buy my 1st mercedes, and am considering the 4 door c class.

It will definately be deisel and sport model. Im thinking the c200, c220 or c250 - if anyone has any opions / knowledge on any 3 of these engines I would appreciate any advice you can offer

I currently own a BMW 525d msport, and 320cd msport (the latter would be eschanged for the merc). So Mercs are a new animal to me and I know very little..!

PS Im looking at age group 2007 - 2010

All those engines are the same size, just differing power outputs.

I would go for the pre-blue efficiency C220cdi - it's a proven engine (modified version carried over from the W203 series) and also there's no dpf to deal with.

These cars were on the 07/57/08 plates.

You are going to get a massive shock going from driving BMW 525d and 320d to a MB C Class. The MB Engine is no where near as good as the BMW if the BMW Engine is Manchester United then the MB is Bolton Wanderers:D

I'd get an extended test drive if I were you so you are really sure, if you are then it depends if you want a manual or auto gearbox as that influences engine choice it you are going auto it has to be the 250 as the auto in the other models feels at odds with the engine IMHO (but I hate autos) the 220 with a manual box is acceptable but the 200 just doesn't work in any form for me

just my two penneth

The sport suffix has nothing to do with the engine its the trim etc, all three engines as someone else has said are the same its just a different ecu

+1 ^. We have a 320 Beemer too which over 136000 miles has been fault free and averaged 51.9 mpg and been fun to drive. I'd suggest the bigger MB diesel (V6) as otherwise you may miss the performance.

Thanks for this. I'll be keeping the 525d, the MB is to replace the 320d. And on paper the merc is 0.5 secs slower 0-62, however the bhp is very similar and the torque/lb is actually more than the 320d.

I guess as you say I'll have to take it for a spin as 'on paper' and 'behind the wheel' I suppose can be very different

Whats the difference between the blue efficiency and pre blue efficiency?

The blue efficiency seem to be quicker, and better mpg on paper

Also around 2010 the power and mpg figures seem to improve - was there an enhancement made around this time to the 220cdi / 250cdi?

Any help much appreciated, thanks!

Which merc is 0.5 secs slower? I have a C250 manual (2 years old), wife has 2 year old 325d coupe. the cars are massively different in how they feel. They both have same bhp but the BM feels quicker and is very much smoother although feels heavier to drive. The Merc is much lighter feeling- controls, steering etc and the engine is quite a bit rougher and louder. I can't have a BM on the co car scheme but if I could I would choose one over the Merc. I like the merc but it would need the C350 to compete with the BM.

Not sure it's fair to compare four and six pots - a fairer comparison would be the x23 vs. C250, x20 vs. C220 and perhaps x18 vs. the C200. A six-pot will always be smoother. If you want to compare your 525d, compare it against an E320. Likewise, the 330d compare against the newer C350 CDI. The 335d probably trumps them all on power/torque, however it's a thirsty beast!

By the way, I made the move from a 120d (FL) to my current C250 CDI and I much prefer this engine - bags of torque (500Nm) and much less rattly. Well it still rattles but it is a four-pot diesel after all!

the blue efficiency engine got uprated injectors versus pre- blue efficiency and it also has a twin turbo versus earlier versions (07-57-08) which had single turbo.

blue efficiency when first launched had injector issues which were fixed under recall.
