I've got a W211 which is great apart from the sat nav going down randomly with the above message. Using Comand APS DVD 2007/2008 and latest firmware upgrade 2006 installed (so I get TMS). If I stop the car and shut everything down then restart it normally recovers but will go down again in about 5-10 minutes. Any ideas anyone?

Does it play CD's OK

original navigation disk in the boot, dashboard command unit plays CDs ok

When did the problem first start? If your DVD is 2007/8 (Version 7?) it is obviously an upgrade on the one that was in the car at build.

If the problem started with the installation of the upgrade disk then you could try removing it and going through the installation process again.

Based on the warning you're getting there is an intermittent loss of read signal. That's likely to be a problem with the drive unit in the boot. I don't know if the car records COMAND errors but it may well be worth asking your local MB dealer to investigate.

The problem also occured with the 2004 APS DVD, and before the firmware upgrade. The 2007-8 APS DVD is pristine with no scratches. I thought updating the APS DVD and firmware may solve the problem which it did not. I have also cleaned the DVD head with a TDK CD laser cleaner to no avail. Can the DVD unit be easily changed? Would it be wortwhile me picking up a cheap secondhand one and changing it myself rather than all the hassle and expense of going through a dealer? Is there any chance this could still be a software problem?

If the disc cuts at the same point I still think tracking error, you could take the unit out and try and clean the lens by hand without using too much downward pressure to avoid damaging the suspension.

With all DVD/CD once the unit has misstracked it looses the TOC and can only start again from removing the disc and re inserting

If you fancy having a look for a cheapo navi processor then yes they can be easily replaced, technically you have get a MOST config error but that will have no effect on the network since it is smart enough to figure it out for itself.

Does sound like you have a problem with the unit.

To answer DieselE it does store MOST component faults.
