No kickdown?

1998 C250 diesel
Hi All,
I'm new to the forum, and thank you to the members that said 'hello' in reply to my post in the 'introduce yourself' bit, lol..

Anyway, I have just acquired a 1998 C250 diesel. Everything seems to be fine mechanically apart from the auto-box kickdown, the gearbox seems to work perfectly and changes up and down when it should do, but there seems to be no kickdown when I hit the button. :dk: If anyone has any ideas as to what may be causing the loss of kickdown, I'd be most grateful.

?

Well, I thought someone might be able to point me in the right direction with my question regarding kickdown? lol.

On the older gearbox models it may be a case of adjusting the kickdown cable. this is usually done on the top of the gearbox. Try asking a local gearbox specialist for advice?

Hi, I wasn't sure if this gearbox had a cable or it was electronic?? Will have to ask about and see. Thanks anyway..

Follow the cable under the bonnet, if it goes to an electric transducer in the nearside bulkhead then check the cable is not slack. There should be an adjuster on the cable and when the throttle is on the floor the transducer should be fully open, if its not then the box will probably not kick down. You should be able to feel the switch operate when you push the pedal to the floor.

Thanks for the advice. When it eventually stops raining and brightens up a bit where I am, I'll have a look and see what I can find. The button feels like it clicks down when I floor the pedal, but I will try what you suggest and see what happens, or see what I find.

Many thanks,

I know this might sound daft, but you haven't got an economy/standard button on your box have you, with it currently set to e, do you? I know in my limited experience that kickdown doesn't happen in economy mode on mercs I've had/have. Hope you get it sorted out.

Hi, on my box there is a 'W' and 'S' setting - winter and standard I believe. I know in 'W' it starts off in 2nd gear, and obviously from 1st in standard. It might just be me, I have had quite a few automatics before, but not any auto diesels - maybe I expect the revs to be higher in kickdown?? Big engined petrols scream when kicked down, this one does drop down a gear and will red line if I let it, I just expected it to behave like my previous petrol cars, lol..
