noisey clanks

started my diesel this morning, while defrosting windscreen noticed engine was making a funny clanking noise, bit like hitting a spoon on a bit if metal, kind of intermittantley, but in some kind of rythem strange is this normal, whent away after warmed up, also on mornings like this is it better to warm the engine first or drive right away

I think the noise is normal 'diesel clatter', nothing to worry about unless it is very loud. With modern diesel engines it is best to drive them more or less from cold but avoid racing the engine until properly warmed up.
