So the dealers will be the best way to go .

Sounds fine to me.
The aux belt system can be a source of odd engine bay noises with multiple pulleys each with bearings. Easy enough to check if a noise is coming from these by briefly running the engine with the belt removed. As this system may be driving the water pump only run the engine for a short time with the belt off otherwise you will risk overheating.
Also before you remove the aux belt draw a diagram of the belts route through the various pulleys.
Isn’t this the M271 engine ?
Known for timing chain/cam issues starting possibly from 80k miles
I'm debating this one. It's expensive and if nothing is wrong in the engine bay I'm thinking to leave it for now. The car runs spot on and I really dont trust mechanics in general, everytime I take my cars in, it comes back with some oddness that wasn't there before.... I have found a specialist for mercedes that's about 10 miles away I might reach out to them let them check out the car see if tthey can see antyhing wrong. So the dealers will be the best way to go .
What mileage are you on ? ( I also have an M271 )I was wondering if it were somthing along here but I honestly cannot hear the noise towards the front/engine of the vehicle. I noticed when I pulled up there was a slight hint of the noise inside the cabin but when I got out , the noise was gone so i'm thinking maybe the noise I was hearing before was never from the front after all anyway...and maybe under the car, maybe heat shield is tapping somewhere or something along those lines, either way I'm starting to think I was wrong in thinking the noise was the lifters or at the front of the car. I'm a novice with cars so I'm paranoid I'm gonna mess it up by taking that off but It does seem pretty straight forward. Problem is though, unless I can hear the sound at the front, disconnect the belt, then i dont hear it anymore its gonna be so hard to figure out as I wont know what to even look for lol
Oh god, don't say that! The engine is the M271 but from the cold start video, and the others, I didn't hear anything that suggested the chain?

Only problem with mains dealer is they require you to book and MOT or Service and then you can have the diagnostic/repairs but they wont do anything unless you at least book a service/mot. So I'm not sure what to do about that one.
Does the engine audio sound normal to you?
I'm on 85000What mileage are you on ? ( I also have an M271 )
If you have never removed an aux belt before then maybe seach Youtube and see if there is a video of someone doing the job. Not difficult in the grand scheme of things but can be tricky and may involve removing fan shrouds to get decent access to the belt tensioner. Maybe ask a local garage to check the belt for you or just get it replaced as a precaution. Should only be an hours labour plus £30 or so for a new belt. Best of luck.I was wondering if it were somthing along here but I honestly cannot hear the noise towards the front/engine of the vehicle. Just bear it in mind , you have entered the zone of “do I need the chain and cams doing “ .I'm on 85000
I see. Bit like the other belt, I think I may just get a garage to have a look at it. I found this (seemingly decent) mercedes specialist garage that was recommended on the forum somewhere by someone and they seem decent. Perhaps I'll reach out to them and have them take a look. Do you think this is one of them "while you wait" jobs or "leave car with garage for the day" jobs? by Job I mean for them to just look at and check it out not actally carry out work etc?Just bear it in mind , you have entered the zone of “do I need the chain and cams doing “ .
Good luck with the fault finding
They need to remove the rocker cover for a physical check .I see. Bit like the other belt, I think I may just get a garage to have a look at it. Yeah maybe I let them take a look and advise. Hate taking cars into garages though, I swear they do something to them each time to make you have to return! They need to remove the rocker cover for a physical check .
Don’t quote me , but they “might” be able to check it through MB Star diagnostic to see if there is any wear ?.
Are you looking for things to worry about?!!!Yeah maybe I let them take a look and advise. Hate taking cars into garages though, I swear they do something to them each time to make you have to return!
By the way the oil dip stick was showing the oil level to be just slightly above the halfway mark. Is that okay? should it not be nearer the max mark ?
Are you looking for things to worry about?!!!
Oil level is fine
I like my hot oil measurement to be at max ,especially on the M271 so there is plenty of clean oil over the chain and cams , but that’s me , I’ve got issuesYeah maybe I let them take a look and advise. I wouldn’t sleep buddy !Are you looking for things to worry about?!!!
You’re beyond saving! I fear the OP is going the same way.I wouldn’t sleep buddy !
That was exactly my thought process too on my carsI like my hot oil measurement to be at max ,especially on the M271 so there is plenty of clean oil over the chain and cams , but that’s me , I’ve got issues
Never buy a car from the halfway up the dipstick brigade buddyThat was exactly my thought process too on my cars
You’re why Mercedes did away with dipsticks!Never buy a car from the halfway up the dipstick brigade buddy
I have no good answers to your very good questions buddy , I just always like to have the maximum oil in the engine that the MB engineers designed it for .Given clean oil, how does the level on the dipstick influence the cam and chain lubrication.
As long as a positive displacement oil pump isn't starved of oil, it has to pump the same volume of oil regardless of the level, provided of course it's above the min mark and the minimum mark was set correctly by the manufacturer. If MB did get he minimum level wrong then that's something we need to know about.
