clk 230k
hi all, i'm new to mercedes ownership, i've just got rid of my bmw 328 convertible, for a 2000 'w' clk 230 kompressor in blue. it's a beautiful drive and looks so much nicer than the bmw. the question i have is, should it sound as though the exhaust is blowing? i've had it to 2 seperate garages, both of which say the exhaust is fine, but i'm convinced it doesn't sound as it should. even on tickover it sounds too loud. or is this how all kompressors sound? thanks in advance, chris. :thumb:

it may be that you have switched from one of the smoothest 6 cylinder engines to a very average 4 cylinder unit.
did you try a CLK320 as well?

Same car as mine and yes cold start and tickover does have a rasp to it. engine is a bit harsh & raucos but a great drivers car.

It a bit better than an average 4 cylinder unit but I agree not the quietest or smoothest but in my opinion a better drive than the 320 as that only comes with an auto box

I'm not sure... but when i first bought my 230k it was whisper silent regardless.

But now i feel what you're saying because i've modified the exhaust.

The manifolds to crack and leak. It maybe worth getting it checked.

OOOOPs maybe I should have said mine has a Brabus exhaust  no sure if that makes a difference or not?

would just like to say thanks for the replys guys. i'll get the manifold checked, as that was the 1st thing i thought it was. i didn't try the clk 320 as i originally had a nissan 300zx twin turbo, which i paid £1600, then swapped it for the bmw, and then i was offered the clk as a swap for the bmw, so, in theory, the clk stands me at £1600!!! once again, thanks for the advice.

The manifold normally goes where it joins the downpipe.....when starting from cold, put your hand down the side and feel under the manifold by the downpipe...should still be cool so you shouldn't burn yourself. If its gone you will feel puffs of exhaust gas.

Sadly you cant repair the manifold as its got a double skin and even worse, they are not cheap to buy.
