Noisy start up on C180k

Hello, in the mornings, especially cold mornings, the engine for 2/3 seconds sounds like a disel engine. Even other people have asked me on start up if it's a disel engine. The noise has recently decreased, but still noriteable.

The noise is not present on a friends car.

My car is a 53 plate car/auto.

Possibly an EGR valve sticking.

I've heard an Audi 1.8 that sounds like this also, but only on cold starts.

If any diesel sounds that bad on start up it wants shooting, it sounds horrible!

update - not as noticable now, but still present when the engines cold - like i said 2 to 3 seconds the rattle on the 180k petrol engine.

The stealership siad it had noted problems like this where the oil does not travel for a few seconds but want to keep the car overnight - knowing my luck, it woun't happen the day theu have her.

what is egr valve and anymore ideas please.
