....for a W203 C270 anyone???

Mine tends to sit at 70-75c during the winter maybe a little higher during the summer - is this a normal temperature?? Am used to my cars sitting around the 88-92c point.

If this isn't normal - possible causes???

Thanks in advance for any advice!
Tony

My ML270 used to run at similar temps until i renewed the thermostat...it now sits at around the 85degs mark.......still slow to warm up but the heater is much better and the fuel consumption improved slightly......So, lots of reasons to renew the stat!

All MBs run between 80-100c the diesels take longer to warm up than the petrols

All thermo fans if fitted cut in at 80c and electric all cut in at 100c

I don't have any mpg problems and the heater has been more than efficient this winter so thought it might just be the design of the engine. I understand that diesels take longer to warm up as the block is thicker etc so obviously heat takes longer to get to the coolant and therefore the sensor!!!
Any other help/observations from anyone??

Easy/hard job??? I am a competent mechanic but have just become lazy!!!

It's an easy job, half hour...the stat comes in its own alloy housing and even with a new temp sender!..........three bolts secure it to the cyl head.....the stat cost around £40' ish

Kwakdonut - word of warning, don't buy from ECPs. They sold me one and after undoing 2 of the 3 bolts i realised there was a slight difference. On contacting them, a different salas assisst said they could not get one for the 270 Cdi, so ended up getting one from MB (£35 ish). Was running at 60 now runs between 80 - 90.

Thanks for that! I generally only buy stuff from ECP/GSF if I know EXACTLY what I am getting. As this is my first MB I have been particularly careful in ensuring I get MB spares when I need to. I will look at getting the part from my local stealer and getting this sorted shortly.

Once again, thanks for all the advice!

My running temp gradually declined over a 3 year period to the point this winter when it was sub zero for a few days that the temp gauge would hardly move off the stop. Prior to this it was running at around 50c and the heater felt fine.

now it runs to spec' at 90c and the heater is 'toast' hot - no improvement in MPG but good to know the engine is running nice and hot which will keep condensation and water build up to a minimum inside the oily bits.

Check operating temp using a multimeter and temp probe 1st. In case gauge or sender is reading low.

I would definitely say that was running cool!!! A 'good' thing is that thermostats generally fail in the 'open' position!!!

  :o :(

something else to fix then when the weather gets warmer............

i'll add it to the list
