Novice question - re laptop rebuild

I have a laptop that is full of old rubbish, but I do not have admin rights to be able to re-build it and / or put XP on it.

Each time I try and do anything remotely advanced, it asks me for the administrator password (which I don't know).

Assuming there is no data that I need and no program that I can't replicate from the set up CDs, can I just wipe the whole c: or something and rebuild it from the XP disks and give myself an admin account ?

Sure. I guess the OS is W2K or XP. Just boot from an XP CD and you will be able to delete partions, create new ones and start completely from scratch.
