News to me today. Taking a car off the road and storing safely in a garage and am told it has to be insured Third Party if it's taxed. If SORN, no insurance....

I was happy to simply leave the car taxed is its cheap, but apparently that's illegal.

Is it just me that was unaware of this?

It makes sense to keep it insured, but I don't understand why it's a legal requirement.

Probably is just you...it's been like this for some time.:D

You will get any remaining full months tax back.

To ensure all taxed cars are insured.

Interestingly I taxed it this month knowing full well it was going in the garage ..... It only had to be insured the day I taxed it ....

You've had to provide proof of insurance (and MOT, if old enough) in order to get a tax disc for as long as I can remember. If you SORN it neither apply, because you're stating that the car won't be used on the road.

I guess my point was that a taxed car doesn't mean it's necessarily insured.

It's taxed for 5.5 months now. No insurance.

And it's going In the garage for a few weeks idle.

Still don't see why a car needs insurance just cos it's got a tax disc....

Because buying a tax disc indicates that it's likely to be used on the road. Otherwise you'd normally SORN it, then get the tax when you were going to start using it.

Whats the point in taxing it if its not going on the road?

Tax is immaterial, £10 per month. I would have to go througthe hassle of Sorn and then re tax in 6 weeks time. I can't be bothered.

Back to OP.

Why does a taxed car in a garage, which is off the road, need to be insured, whereas a car that has no tax, through choice, does not need insurance. Whether I choose to suffer 30p per day is up to me to save paperwork. I just don't want to pay 30p per day PLUS insurance ..........

It isn't just me I can see now.....

This is the CIE ( continuous insurance ) legislation that was brought in thanks to the scourge of uninsured drivers that abound everywhere .

Basically , unless you declare your car SORN it must be insured .

Quite how it stops those who don't even bother to register cars to themselves I don't know .

You can get cheap laid up cover from many insurers , but that won't usually register on the MID for DVLA enforcement purposes .

Perhaps there is a marketing opportunity here for some enterprising insurer who will offer a very cheap laid up policy with a token allowance of perhaps 100 miles so that the car can be taken locally for an MOT or suchlike , but not enough that the laid up status can be abused .
