2001 - C220cdi - nice car shame about the starting.... been to merc dealer - consequently extracted 120 quid for telling me theres nothing wrong!!!! so no joy there then...

diagnosis - FIRST start in the morning engine fires and then immediately 'dies' ... after about 2 - 3 minutes of cranking the engine finally fires....

all SUBSEQUENT starts throughout the day are fine (and it can be stood for up to 8 hours)

any ideas greatly appreciated

My first two gueses are for either air leaking into the fuel lines so causing an air bubble or the injectors are leaking off so doing the same.

Did the dealer perform a leak off test.
If it fails a leak off test then unfortunately the £120 charge will pale into insignifcance.

hi... unsure if the dealer performed this... they were more interested in getting the car back in to "spend a few hours finding the fault"... mmmm...can a none merc main dealer do this test?

Anyone with the appropriate leak off test bottles can do this test, so either a decent independant or a Bosch diesel specialist.

no the car is on a flat surface

The reason I asked was that many cars would not start when parked on a slope in one direction but would when parked the other way around.

You do have air in the system and this can include the return to tank.

Have a look in the morning and see if you can see any bubbles in any of the pipes,

thanks for that.... does the engine need to be cold (ie in the 'bad start') state to do this?

No, it's just a measure of the leak off at the injectors when running.

You can buy the kit yourself to do it.

search: united diesel.
