Oil leak from pipe

Have heard that the pipes from the gearbox to the cooler at the front of the car can leak. I have a drip from right at the front of the car (not engine) and was wondering if it was these pipes?

If so, are they hard to change, has anybody done this?

This happened on my 1990 230E. The pipe from the top of the radiator had corroded right through at the mounting bracket and emptied my gearbox all over the engine undertray (and a friend's driveway ) during the course of a weekend.

Easy fix (for Mr. Walker) - old pipe off at the radiator and gearbox hose, new pipe on, add ATF. The last part is probably the hardest because you don't know how much has leaked out.

Another option if you don't know how much has been lost would be to drain the remaining fluid and do a completely new refill. An examination of the old fluid might also reveal any excessive wear due to fluid loss???

Colour of the drips will help you determine the problem ie

1. engine oil

2. gearbox fluid

3. coolant

all different colours.

I had mine replaced on 7/12/05 as I was told the gearbox coolant pipes where rusty when the car was bein serviced.
