mercedes clk55 amg
Hello I have recently bought a clk55 amg and I think it might have to much oil in it, on level ground when warm computer says 9 litres. I have got a universal dipstick and I get 185mm of oil in sump, I think the dipstick is going to the bottom. Does anybody know what reading I should get on the dipstick

Is this engine oil? Are there no Min and Max marks on the dipstick? Usually the difference between the top and bottom mark is 2L.

Sorry, on rereading, by 'Universal' you mean non-MB dipstick?

Yes non Mercedes, yes engine oil. No the dipstick is in mm, and is just pushed to bottom of sump. They done come with a dipstick and using know weather I can even get a proper length ones

Sorry that didn't make sense, I mean I don't know whether I can even get a proper length dipstick

Without using a proper dipstick you are peeing in the wind.

Thanks for all help, I pumped out nearly 2.5 litres and now the dash says 8.5l and dipped it with the dipstick and get 165mm of oil in sump, from researching a bit this all seems ok and as it should be. Looks like it's been overfilled, probably because these cars have no dipstick, which is just stupid in my opinion

No dipstick and on an AMG model, totally stupid and unacceptable IMO too.

What I find amazing is how they put a dipstick tube on the engine but not a dipstick, I mean how much can a dipstick be worth

The dipstick tube is for MB techs to syphon out the engine oil.

The lack of dipstick is to avoid overfilling by over-enthusiastic motorists - owners are supposed to rely on the computer reading instead.

Whether we agree with the above or not is another matter... but appratmntly this is the reasoning behind it.

Does the computer tell us the condition of the oil? T'would be handy if it did, when checking a potential purchase for instance.

How many times have we read on here "When the computer says 'add one litre' just add a half because the computer gets it wrong"? I recently serviced my car, added a measured 6.5 litres which the computer reported as 5.9 litres and yes, I did allow plenty of time for the oil to reach the sump.

If we can't believe it, what use is it?
