Hi i'm thinking of fitting a om613 or om648 diesel from e320 into a 190 w201 and was wondering if this conversion has been done before in a w201 or w124. If not what kind of hurdles am I likely to face. Now not to be rude please realise i'm not asking if this is cost effective or if its worth it, or whether i should just buy a e320. This is a request on the technical difficulties i might face, which of the systems would i need to keep to use the original ecu and maybe gearbox and avoid the limp mode? Do i have to keep the instrument clustor etc.. Any input on making the conversion work would be much appriciated

Basicly your going to need to fit every electrical item from the cdi into the 190, that may sound extreme but the time youve tried to intergrate the 2 together you will wish you never started.

Mercedes themselves built a "190 D BlueEFFICIENCY " with a cdi engine, iirc they used all sorts of tricks to make it run.The boot was full of electrics to fool the various ecu's into thinking the engine was in it's normal home.

If it's power you want, the om606 from the e300 turbodiesl is the way to go.

i have read about the 190d blue efficiency, and i don't think it will be that hard to make the electronics play nice in a 190, especially when working with the more modern cars.

i reckon the mercedes techs took the route they did because of financial constraints on them rather then a technical difficulty, when you take into account the engine was new at the time and the gearbox, along with ecus it would have been alot to just give employees for free. now as for the om606 thats not something i had considered, but it would be pretty straight forward to fit, but how easy is it to get 235bhp and 550nm without changing the turbo and fitting a myna pump and getting a thick cloud of black smoke when i push it?

i'm after the challenge more then the power.

Have a look on Superturbodiesel.com, someone is part way through fitting a OM606 to a w201, their having problems routing the exhaust down past the steering box. Fitting a turbo OM605 would be easier and 200bhp is achievable with the standard pump elements.

Keep us posted! I'd love to see this done

I think you'd need a complete donor vehicle to keep life simple(ish). I think I'd start by seeing what the bare minimum of electronics is that would let the engine & box run

Simtek have recently released an aftermarket diesel ECU for the Daimler 642 engine which would be a simple way to run one of these engines without the original harness & ECU setup:

Diesel ECU Packages

The turnkey ECU setup is £3500 inc VAT

Thanks for the info, i will definently make a build thread when i start the work, i already have the engine, and im quite sure i can get the stock ecu to play nice, cars with modern electronics are easier to work with.
