One AWFUL W116

I have a huge poster somewhere of the white gullwing SEC... back in the day it was amazing but it doesnt have that timeless quality of an AMG..

dare i say it looks a bit barry now..

This car is allegedly being talked about all over Germany ! Everyone is trynig to figure out which tuner breathed on this....some say SGS, some say Panther....

Wasn't Panther's design, 4 bumper-mounted driving lights, as per your old purple Stratton 500SEL?
Or was that more a specific design for the '126 bumper?

Am I missing something or is a question of personal taste as I cannot find it to like any of these SGS monstrosities?

Ducks and hides! ;-)

If you go on youtube & search up 'SGS SEC Marbella', iirc, you will see a SEC convertible with a fully operational power hood!!... the clip shows it going down as smooth as my W124 cabriolet roof.... can you imagine the man hours/ work /skill /effort required to pull that off...

PS:If the clip is still there note also the the slight raised lip on the rear boot spoiler, very subtle, but brilliantly executed.

LOL, Dont like that SL, I appreciate your point, but the thing is, the people who spent the $$$$'s on these car did so, so they could be different from the crowd, quite simply having a car that can be bought straight out the dealership just wouldnt have do in their circles...
They also tend to have similarly OTT houses & even wardrobes... not being to everyones taste is missing the point, they'll just say its an acqiured taste.

I must admit though, all the OTT customness, i seem to prefer on 80's cars... its more in keeping with that decade imo.... just dont look as cool on modern cars, that SL being a perfect example.

You can still buy aproved kits in germany to convert old mercedes saloons into convertibles, even the 4 door models, i suspect that the tuning companines were buying in the kits and then adding there own body styling and engine tuning.

I have been thinking about hunting down another W114 coupe and buying a kit for it, would make a lovely summer car and i cant see i'd lose money on it given that none of the original ones were factory built anyway.

A lilttle bit of work on it and it could become a showcar!!

It has potential - and I am not one for classics!!

Looks like the price is going up...not by much, but a bit!

I did email the seller about the car, however he did not know much to be honest. I was going to ask the VIn, but the Russian site only goes back to 1980.

Is there any other way of finding out about the car...another VIN decoder or other source?

For some reason, god knows why, I'm kinda interested! Shoot me now...please!
