OSX Lion

Ok, updated OSX to Lion with 4gb ram, no issues to report..

Then today I upgraded my ram to 8gb and have had kernal panic on start up, Freezes, when wake from sleep..

Odd thing is, Ive tested the ram in my other machine and all is fine.. In current machine I ran tests with rember and all have come out clean with no ram problems and in system report it says its ok..

So what is causing the problems?
Machine in question is Macbook pro 13 mid 2009 (which says 8gb is compatible)

After installing OS Lion my iMac cannot find my Dell printer, which has worked fine on all the other upgrades. Have spent all day trying new drivers etc but still cannot print anything, connection has remained untouched and is via ethernet cable.

Annoyingly Apple want 5p per minute to be told about the fault, which many others have according to Google. Thankfully I have a Dell laptop using Windows which still speaks to the printer.

You might want to try using this software which I understand has over 2100 drivers for printing devices.

I also believe that you will find that the Dell generic postscript printer driver will work with your printer under Lion.

I keep getting "Looking for printer" followed by "The printer is not connected" as soon as I try to print anything. Makes me think it is more than just the driver as I've tried the latest Dell and Lexmark drivers, including the Dell generic postscript driver without success.

Thanks for the help jepho, I just hope I can sort this problem out before I do something silly.

It sounds as if my suggestions were not that useful to you, for which I apologise. Have you tried removing the printer and the prefs plist and reinstalling the Dell printer with its generic postscript driver? I would also consider calling Dell Tech support (I have no idea what their tech support is like) but because their is no love lost between Dell and Apple, there is some possibility that Dell have not yet updated their drivers.

I use one common printer (Brother 5240) and one very obscure printer for coloured photographs (Mitsubishi 12 x 8inch roll-fed CP3800DW dye-sublimation printer) The drivers for both printers were not updated since I installed Lion and both work exactly as expected. This makes me suspect that the Dell driver may not be that well written and considering the degree of animosity between Michael Dell and Steve Jobs, I can't say I am surprised.

What printer model are you using?

It's a Dell 2330dn, I did read that it was comparable with the Lexmark 360 so tried that driver with no success. My printer is connected to the router via an ethernet cable so it can be used wirelessly from my Dell laptop (which still prints by the way).

What does annoy me is that the current setup has worked fine for the past 2 years, until installing Lion.

Thanks for the input Jepho, I'm sure it will get sorted as Google has others reporting the same fault and Apple don't need bad publicity.

don't know if this is a step in the right direction...

I have in desperation contacted Apple at 5p per minute and between us and me fiddling while waiting I've now got the printer working again. Not sure how or why but having the printer working again has made my day, sad isn't it.

Thanks to all who offered assistance, have just opened a Diet Coke to celebrate.:bannana::bannana::D

Good to know you are now up and running. Did you discover where the problem lay?

As far as I can tell the problem was the iMac loosing the routers IP address. No idea why as no changes had been made.

trying to install this on my other macbook pro...

the link says "With the Lion boot disc you can boot any Lion compatible Mac, and install 10.7 just like you installed previous versions of Mac OS X. You can even use Disk Utility's Restore function to image your Lion boot disc image onto a external drive suitable for performing a clean install on a optical-drive-less MacBook Air, or Mac mini. Clean installs with Lion are easy once you find where Apple has hidden the boot disk."

but when my mac restarted itself after installing lion, it comes up with a welcome screen and the arrow at the bottom. when i click this; it takes me into mac osx utilities with 4 options under...
1. restore from time machine backup.
2. reinstall mac osx
3. get help online
4. disk utility

HELP!!!

have noticed i can no longer pinch on the desktop screen to reduce/ enlarge desktop icons; i have to go into the preferences for it.

And you are not going to find it either. They have removed the functionality. I am thinking Snow Leopard was a tad better

How old is your MBP?

the one i'm trying to install to is about 6 months old... my dad's got it. mine is older ( over a year old) and had no problems installing Lion.
I followed instructions about copying the InstallESD.dmg file and burning it to disc... and sent the disc to him to put lion on. the laptop he's using was bought by me and set up under my username etc and registered to the same iTunes accounts etc...

Sorted! :)
Went with option 2 ( reinstall OSX)

Thanks for all the head scratching!
