OT: Post Pics of your computer desktop

Hi Kinky,

re: Linux

I was reading yesterday that you can now get Linux that runs just from a CD. Don't need to install anything. Just need a bootable CD-ROM on your computer. You can try it and if you don't like it just reboot back into Windoze.

Can't remember where I read it but the favourite was http://www.knoppix.com Comes with lots of apps.

Yeah, Knoppix is excellent if you fancy a cheeky peek at Linux without actually installing it on your hard disk.

It is a massive .iso download, so if you can't be bothered pulling 600MB then let me know and I will pop a copy in the post.

Bare in mind that there is also a German version, so make sure you get the right one :)

You can also boot up off a Knoppix CD and copy data off the Hard Disk Drive of the PC your on to elsewhere over the network - bypassing any NT authentication.....

So if you need anything off a password protected PC, you know what tool to use in future ;)

Hehe, and thats exactly what we did at work last week on an NT Box which had been forgotten about for 18 months. Nobody bothered to remember what the admin password was, and the machine was needed there and then.

One of the reasons why I don't use M$ products is because they are so insecure. I mean XP still has bugs in it which hark back to Win95 and have never been addressed.

The reason why virii are rife on the 'net is down to Outlook being as solid as a piece of Swiss cheese. So many holes and so easy to exploit by worms. Scary.

Long live the penguin!

For the record, I also use a linux based boot floppy that will allow you to change NT passwords without knowing what the original one was. Takes about two minutes to do from boot.

this is my desktop (the start menu is up top)
10.26.03-17:11:52desktop.jpg

this is my desktop image minus icons a screen grab fromt he propper version of ring and nto the butchered american version with ringu (what ring is actually known as) super imposed over the top)
ring.sized.jpg

my pc's specs

duron 700
512mb ram
ti4200 geforce 4
2 network card (one 3com one generic)
sb16 (cant afford a better one)
isa scsi card (for a professional spec scanner ive had for years)
western digital special edition 8mb cache 80gb drive
memorex 12x burner
8x dvd drive (not used much)

running 98se as the isa card wotn work under nay other o/s (dont use outlook, dont downlaod from unkown sources, run zonealarm so its reasonable safe and it gets scanned by grc.com every week to see if there are any weaknesses)

i did have redhat linux and beOS on this pc as well but i needed the space

to think this is the quickets pc i own but it gets through united devies workunits pretty quick

Hehe, you sure you got enough icons there? There's a bit of space in the bottom right there :)

Good to see you are taking security seriously. I cannot recommend enough the use of a firewall, AV scanner, spyware tools, etc. Full marks!

Is Win98 still supported by M$? I know they increased NT support after claiming it was obsolete.

i studied comptuers in college but even before that i knew about security

actually that space has gone

in my system tray is zonealarm and avg anti-virus and i use a webmail account so no nasty auto executable viruses that take advantage of outlook can hurt me

run adaware every 3 days and windows update every 2 months jsut to check

yea 98 si still supported and considerign this is a slow pc you dont notice it, win 98 after ive had my hands on it is liek a fiesta with a 6ltr engine in it

fcuking ugly but goes like stink

I'd be interested.

Always thought about going the Linux route on one of my boxes .........

Ain't got the guts to do it though .... Windows 16/32/DOS/OS2 I can take to pieces in my sleep. Anything else ....

K

OS/2 WARP, now I'm no expert but my Dad, who's more of an expert than me said that OS fairly flew, made Windoze look pretty septuagenarian.

Is this true or is he just BS'ing me to make him look cooler than he is!
