Over 100,000 S-Class models have been delivered to customers since its market launch a year ago
China and USA largest markets for the luxury sedan
Ola Källenius: “The sales figure of 100,000 S-Class models in just one year is the proof: the combination of high-class quality, exemplary efficiency and a host of innovative assistance and safety systems delights our customers and meets their highest demands.”
One year after the launch in all core markets Mercedes-Benz has already delivered over 100,000 S-Class models worldwide. Never before have so many vehicles of the luxury sedan been delivered to customers in the first year of full availability. As such, to date this constitutes the most successful market launch of an S-Class. The new-generation S-Class is, however, not only making history with the most successful market launch, but also with the fastest market launch: within less than twelve weeks the S-Class went on sale in all three core markets: Germany (end of July 2013), China (end of September 2013) and the USA (mid-October 2013).
“The sales figure of 100,000 S-Class models in just one year is the ultimate proof: the combination of high-class quality, exemplary efficiency and a host of innovative assistance and safety systems delights our customers and meets their highest demands”, says Ola Källenius, Member of the Divisional Board of Mercedes-Benz Cars responsible for Marketing & Sales. “We extended our range of luxury cars at the end of September by including two fascinating and promising models in the guise of the new S-Class coupe and the S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID.”
Since the start of the year Mercedes-Benz has sold 75,391 S-Class models, twice as many as in the same period of the previous year (+105.8%). Thus more S-Class vehicles have been delivered to customers within the nine months of 2014 than in the full years 2012 or 2013. In September alone, the luxury sedan was sold 9,501 times (+139.3%).
China and USA as biggest markets
For decades the S-Class has repeatedly been the world’s top-selling luxury sedan. Mercedes-Benz delivers almost every second S-Class to customers in China, the model’s largest market. One quarter of all S-Classes is sold in the USA; one in ten sedans goes to a customer in Germany. A country comparison reveals that the youngest S-Class customers are located in China: in their early 40s, they are on average 15 years younger than in Western Europe or the USA. For many, the S-Class is their very first own car. Given the particular preference of Chinese customers for ample room in the rear, Mercedes-Benz has been offering the luxury sedan in China as a long-wheelbase version exclusively. Some 35 percent of S-Class models are ordered in China explicitly as a chauffeur-driven variant. Three quarters of all S-Class customers in China also choose the Rear Seat Entertainment System which features two large displays in the backrests of the front seats. The Stuttgart-based premium brand has also modified the PARKTRONIC assistance system to the heavy traffic and limited space found in Chinese mega-cities. The AIR-BALANCE package is also very popular among S-Class customers – and not just in China. Every second S-Class worldwide is shipped with the intensive air filtration and fragrancing option. One out of every four luxury sedan customers opts for the massage function.
Luxury car family with six derivatives
The new S-Class will be available in six variants altogether. In addition to the short and long-wheelbase version, the S-Class coupe was launched on 27 September. Three other exclusive derivatives are set to follow. A plug-in hybrid variant of the S-Class also went on sale at the end of September. Following the S 400 HYBRID and the S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID, the S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID is therefore the third hybrid model in the new S-Class. The series production launch of this technology began at Mercedes-Benz in 2009. By 2017, Mercedes-Benz aims to launch nine further plug-in hybrid models.
60 years ago, the launch of the W220 model laid the foundations for the S-Class model series. Since then Mercedes-Benz has delivered more than 3.5 million of these vehicles to customers all around the world. The brands flagship has for many years been considered the benchmark of automotive engineering, a distinction that it has repeatedly earned with every new generation thanks to innovative technologies, pioneering safety systems and outstanding comfort. The previous generation sold 500,000 units, becoming the most successful S-Class model series of all time.

Is it just me or are Mercs these days just slight variants of the E-Class.

New C-Class looks like a small E-Class and the S-Class seems to be a large E-Class :dk:

I was looking at a w222 in a main dealer showroom last week. Anthracite blue with full AMG kit, and it was by far the best looking S Class I've ever seen. The w220 and w221 were damp squibs to me, but the new one looks stunning in person.

The new C is just a shortened W222. Not a very good decision by MB IMHO. The new C's design doesn't represent the W222 through indirect design cues, like the W204 and the W221 or the W203 and the W220. I personally think the new C is over-designed, totally due to it looking exactly like the new S on the outside.

I couldn't agree with you more Rash :thumb: you really have great difficulty in distinguishing the difference between the S and the E Class from the rear .

They are all variations on a theme :( From the A to the S. It all started with the CLS Wave going through the side panels and now all of the models have it.

I was blown away by the AMG version on display at Brooklands, but did find the ordinary S class strangely underwhelming in comparison.

I saw an S class on the road from my little Fiat a couple of days ago and it is an immense car!

I really like the new S-Class, C-Class and facelift E-Class.

I've seen a few if these W222's on the road and they look statesmen-like, I think they're still the benchmark for the daddy saloons.

i think a familial look isn't a bad thing, the car needs to be recognisable as a mercedes, the audi styling may be very deriviative but there is no mistaking one for anything else and that sells car.

i was in rome relatively recently and saw one, and wished i could afford that over a 221. the new one is truly stunning in the metal and such a nice looking interior

I also have a similar problem... I can't realise the difference between the W205 and the W212 (facelift) from the front and I can't tell the difference between a W205 and a W222 on the road (unless seen from the front)! Also, the new A-Class design cues are part of the W205 and W222 (or vice-versa) which makes the scenario even more confusing

Yes I agree about the CLS starting the trend of a dropping line through the side body. I think MB are getting too excited or running out of ideas because they seem to throw a dropping line in most of their new models nowadays.

I have the use of one for a week over Xmas this year. I'm looking forward to the experience.

I too like the S Class but not so keen on the dash inside. How on earth do they manage to build 273 cars per day. I'm guessing this is from more than one factory.

I don't think the previous generation S-class looked anything like as similar to its smaller brethren as the current one does. A shame I think.

Ford aligned their hatchback range designs a few years ago too. The old Ka, Fiesta and Focus all used to look nothing alike, now the new Ka, Fiesta and Focus are all very similar looking apart from size. With perspective, as a Focus drives away from you it becomes a Fiesta, then a Ka. :D
