Hi,

W208, CLK230k, 1999 facelift, 101,000 miles

So a month ago, the car stalled, was generally hesitating, and would stall if left running. A STAR check found the MAS/MAF was faulty too much air was being let in. Picked up a new MAS from eBay reasonably cheap and this was fitted and STAR cleared.

The car didn't feel right; MPG was high and gear changes not that smooth. I thought I'd give it time for the new MAF to "bed in" with the ECU, so the ECU would get used to its new readings.

However, when cold the first gear change still feels a little harsh. Also the MPG on start is 10-13MPG, 10-15MPG around town and 21-26MPG on motorways. This is all high consumption.

Then...
Stopped in traffic, on a reasonably warm day, I noticed that the temp had almost hit 125C! I turned off the A/C, whacked the heat on high and fans on high. The temp dropped very quickly to around 90C. I left the AC off till I was moving again. Temperature held at 85-90C.

The car had B service a few hundred miles ago, so is well maintained.

I'm having it looked at tomorrow, but just thought I'd like to get a few opinions.

Thanks all,
R

Was the MAS original MB part, or pattern? If not MB, could be a quality issue with low-cost after-market sensor?

Pattern, but don't see how that would effect the temperature.

Was it a bosch part?

The air mass issue (if any) wont cause an over heating problem. Do you fan(s) run?

I would never fit a pattern mas!

Cheers Olly.

Not a Bosch. - I'm guessing that is a likely issue. But would STAR readings be able to show that the MAS was working properly?
I'll check the fans tomorrow. Anything else it could be?

it may show that it is working properly at idle but it is much different while driving.

I would not use a non bosch air mass EVER as they are ****e and don't work properly. False economy.

Looks affordable - the last time I needed a MAS it cost me the best part of £250! :D

To be fair, I'd have paid twice that just to get the thing back to normal at the time lol

Yeah hopefully this fix one problem...and it is pretty annoying when it just doesn't "feel" right.

Overheating is another issue.

As Ollie, no point in fitting anything other than Bosch, just throwing money away IMHO.

Overheating I would say is not related fans would be first port of call, followed by a check of coolant for contamiants, same with the oil.

I can get you an air mass for your car for £155 delivered.

Call me Tuesday if you want one.

Not meaning to hijack here, but if your MAF is the circular connection type, I actually have one on the C230K I am currently breaking for parts and i'll let you have it very cheaply. Let me know if you want it.

Yes! PM sent, I'm aiming to sort this tomorrow before lunch...so that might be pushing it.

Olly, thank you as always, but looking to get it sorted this weekend.

Cheers,
Ross

Adam, please can you check the numbers on side of the MAS to see if it matches the numbers:

280 217 114
000 094 0948
LM 0018

Cheers

It was the throttle body...balls!
