Own up - who left this on my Jaguar?

I'd heard the 6 cylinders were not that reliable when compared to 8 cylinders of the X308 era - is this not the case or are you not bothered?

Not the case, the AJ6/AJ16 engines are considered very robust, cracking exhaust manifold and a new cylinder head gasket after about 150k about the only issues. As David just said, the early V8s had serious Nikasil bore liner issues (just like BMW with their engines at the time), and plastic chain tensioners. I thought about a later V8 it but preferred the straight six as a long term proposition - it has steel liners. The smoothness and silence of the engine is seriously impressive, and the torque, though not monstrous at 500+nm, just dispatches anything you really need to without breaking sweat.

About the only car of mine that gave me such a sense of effortless serenity was my Bentley Turbo R, but this is so much better built and much better riding too.

Fortunately mine got an MOT last month and the only work in marginal need of doing is a new set of rear anti roll bar bushes, and I decided to change the Pirellis to Dunlops as the former are 7 years old and just a bit hard.

I'm starting to get into the Jaguar vibe.

Some years ago I owned a SIII XJ6 4.2. It is still the most comfortable riding car I have ever owned by a country mile and I still have a soft spot for them.

My dad had a 1976 xj12c. I loved being a passenger in it.

Once negative point gents...the jag forum:(, I did venture there a few times, wit, humour and factual knowledge is strictly not allowed so I fled back home to the MB forums fast lol:thumb::D

Interestingly I found there is more jag knowledge in here:dk::confused:

My preference is always for comfort and good ride over sporting capabilities, but I consider effortless performance as part of comfort. I remember a conversation with a much more socially elevated colleague in my banking days about Jaguars (I was considering a V12 XJ40 IIRC) and something he said about the buyers touched on a degree of social insecurity in my make up then, and moved me on to my Bentley (a rotten car really). Then just the other day I thought I've tried most cars for comfort and not really found a happy medium, so returned to Jaguars, having decided long ago that letting others define your happiness never gets you anywhere (unless married). I decided against a newer one on my normal principle that with older cars the fewer things that can go wrong the better.

The XJR is not serene at low speed, but at normal speeds it just flattens bumps and keeps the weight of the car nicely controlled through corners. I don't want this car to be a track or cross country sprint car, but like the ability to make it go woosh and handle the odd corner that turns out to be a bit sharper than I thought.

It's pretty dead that forum. This place remains the go to motoring forum for me!

I find that a forum is only as good as those that administer it, and if the administrators have no sense of humour, they tend to dampen the site with their lack of laughter.

On this forum, the administrators (and moderators) are much more light hearted, often joining in the banter, which makes for a much more pleasant environment to discuss something we all love dearly, which is enjoying life (and our cars).

It can be hard to shake once it gets hold of you!

I've had an '88 XJS 3.6 manual, a '95 XJR, and a '95 facelift XJS.

The last one was a disappointment, but the other 2 were stunning cars.

Something to watch for on X300 XJRs is the auto box. Mine had a problem and had to be replaced, and I was told at the time that it wasn't uncommon!!

Perhaps we Jaguar defectors need a sub forum of our own on here. Best of both worlds!

I must say, having returned to Jaguar after a prolonged absence, I do feel as if I'm home again.

The Mercedes, whilst a worthy car, was just too heavy and ponderous, needlessly complicated, and unreliable. And I wouldn't waste my own excrement on the dealers and MB customer services...

How come?

That's a low mileage car per annum - and you've spent a a hefty chunk of what its worth just to get it roadworthy.
I initially thought you said you got the car for £650 and it passed its mot
