Hi, I would like to respray my 1997 C class changing from solid white to metalic grey. Please recommend a good brand of metalic paint as I believe the major part of the cost is the labour and not the cost of the paint. Thanks.

I recently ordered some paint from www.paints4u.com for all my cars.
I chose the water based paint as it is much easier to handle and seems very eay to spray. (purchasesd an Iwata Eclipse G6 spray gun and Iwata powerjet compressor).
Very impressed with their service - orders delivered next day.
Used some yesterday to respray a brand new bumper rail in Atlas Grey (MB7181) and the match is perfect. Top coated it with Upol UHS UV resistant Clear coat and fitted it back on the car.

Isnt the eclipse gun rather small for doing cars?

I thought that was more for doing airbrush work.

Thank you for the info. I intend to let the garage does the respray job as I intend to respray the entire car. I would like to choose the paint. Are there different grade of paints that I could choose from? I live in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Thank you in advance

It is an Eclipse G6 which looks like a smaller version of the paint guns that the pros use. It would be true to say that it is designed for spot repairs as the version I have only holds 110ml of paint. However this is more than enough to respray a bumper rail with several light coats before coating with the clearcoat. I found the water based paint (Lechler) from paints4u.com to be very easy to spray and an excellent colour match.
I have also order an Iwata LPH50 with 200ml reservoir which is better for slightly bigger jobs.
I would not recommend either for respraying a whole car.

Depends what you want - the water based paint is made by Lechler who specialise in this.
There are many other paint manufacturers including Glasurit, Spies Hecker, Dupont etc. I am not qualified to comment on the merits of these paints.

If you're going to use a garage I'd let the garage buy the paint. They'll have a brand they use and have the matching thinners, hardeners, lacquer etc. If you buy just the paint and there is a problem with the finish they'll immediately have an out in blaming the material you supplied.

Not all materials are compatable, there are variatins in the ratio of hardener, thinner and base coat. It is therefore bad practice to arbitrarily mix and match.
